Job Description
General Description
The STEP Academy at Baruch College (a STEM academic enrichment and college preparation program) hasseveral open instructor positions for the spring semester. Please note: These courses are non-credit,introductory and culminating workshop series. Participants do not receive an official grade.
The Spring 2026 Program runs for 12 Saturdays: January 24 through April 25, excluding February 21 and April 11.
1st Period Course: Immunology Seminar | Schedule: 9am-10:25am
Course Description: This course will study the anatomy of the lymphatic system (bone marrow, thymus, lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, and spleen) and the physiology of immune responses, innate vs adaptive immunity and homeostasis. Students will discuss vaccines, allergies, autoimmune disorders, and diseases that compromise the immune system. Related career pathways will be explored.
2nd Period Course: Respiratory Seminar | Schedule: 10:35am-12pm
Course Description: This anatomy and physiology course covers the function of the lungs and diaphragm, along with the mechanics and functions involved in breathing and gas exchange. Students will learn how the respiratory system works in conjunction with the circulatory, nervous, digestive, and muscular systems to facilitate gas exchange, control breathing, and support overall bodily functions. Respiratory diseases and conditions (COPD, asthma, lung cancer), medical interventions, medical specialists (pulmonologists, respiratory therapists) who provide treatment, and related career pathways will be explored.
Additional Information: These courses are designed for high school students interested in improving theirscience comprehension for test preparation and college readiness for science courses.
Salary: $1,350 = [$45 an hour x 2.5 hours (1.5 hours of instruction + 1 hour of preparation) x 12 sessions]
Other Duties
+ Prepare and teach curriculum for 20-22 students
+ Evaluate student and group performance
+ Provide staff with measurable results in student learning through assessments
+ Monitor and maintain accurate student attendance records
+ Reassess curriculum based on students' needs, interests, and understanding of materials
+ Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required:
+ Availability for each program day
+ Degree in biology, science education, or related subject
+ Experience in a teaching capacity in subject area
+ Experience with designing/implementing a course curriculum
+ Have a strong classroom management style
Preferred:
+ Strong background in the subject area
+ Prior teaching experience with high school or undergraduate students
+ Ability to engage students with creative lessons and innovative teaching style
+ Possess good interpersonal skills with adolescents and a strong understanding of their maturity levels
+ Enthusiasm for the subject with flexibility in adjusting curriculum to reflect students' abilities
