    Job Overview

     

    The Solid Waste and Recycling Foreperson, Recycling and Waste Management – Planning and Facilities Management, Georgetown University, plays a key role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the university’s waste and recycling services. This position exists to ensure that solid waste and recycling activities are conducted efficiently, safely, and in alignment with departmental goals. The Foreperson coordinates crew assignments, oversees fieldwork, and supports operational execution, working closely with the Solid Waste & Recycling Manager on matters related to staffing, scheduling, and safety compliance.

     

    This role is essential in maintaining campus cleanliness, responding to service requests, and ensuring that recycling and disposal services meet university standards. The Foreperson also ensures that equipment is operated and maintained properly and that all regulatory requirements are met. Additional Duties include, but are not limited to:

     

    + Assigns and monitors daily work tasks for the Solid Waste and Recycling crew

    + Provides on-the-job guidance and communicates operational needs to the supervisor

    + Coordinates waste and recycling collection, transport, and off-campus disposal

    + Inspects vehicles, equipment, and work sites to ensure safety and cleanliness

    + Responds to urgent service needs and weather-related events as assigned

    + Maintains compliance with safety regulations and environmental standards

    + Prepares and submits daily documentation and incident reports

     

    Work Interactions

     

    The Solid Waste and Recycling Foreperson interacts regularly with staff in the Recycling and Waste Management unit and the broader Planning and Facilities Management department, and may occasionally engage with students, faculty, staff, and visitors while performing duties across Georgetown University’s Main and Medical Center campuses. This position reports directly to the Solid Waste & Recycling Manager and supports the department’s operational goals by coordinating daily assignments, monitoring fieldwork, and communicating staffing needs or performance concerns to the Manager. While the Foreperson does not directly supervise staff, they play a critical role in ensuring that solid waste and recycling services are delivered efficiently and in alignment with the university’s broader mission of sustainability, safety, and operational excellence.

    Requirements and Qualifications

    + High school diploma or equivalent

    + Two years of experience in general labor or manual work; solid waste or recycling experience

    + Ability to operate and inspect commercial vehicles and heavy equipment safely

    + Knowledge of machinery maintenance, solid waste practices, and safety procedures

    + Strong verbal communication skills; able to interact effectively with staff, supervisors, and the public

    + Ability to organize and motivate a team to complete assignments and coordinate progress with management.

    + Self-motivated, dependable, and environmentally conscious; able to work independently

    + A valid driver’s license from Maryland, District of Columbia or Virginia is required.

    + A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months of hire.

    + Specialized Certification: Department of Transportation Health Certificate (DOT) required. This position requires the incumbent to operate University commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26K pounds maximum (e.g., tow trucks, box trucks, trash trucks, buses, lifts, etc.). As such, the incumbent must possess a medical card and/or certificate issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT), which is issued by a licensed “medical examiner,” after completion of a DOT physical examination as defined in GU Policy 1017 and DOT Regulations 391.11 (4) – Medical Card/Certificate and 390.5 (1) – Commercial Motor Vehicles (10K+) Definitions ( http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov ).

    + Experience directly related to recycling and solid waste management and leadership (or related field).

    Pay Range:

    The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

    $20.16 - $31.30

     

    Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
