Assistant Vice President of Infrastructure
Required Qualifications** (as evidenced by an attached resume) **:
Bachelor’s degree. Ten (10) years of increasingly complex IT management and leadership. Project management experience. Experience managing, coaching, and mentoring information technology professionals. Demonstrated experience working, collaborating, and establishing credibility and relationships with senior leadership, colleagues, and customers.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree. Additional years of experience of full time directly related progressively responsible experience (Networking, Infrastructure, Cloud technologies and services and leadership). ITL experience. Budget experience. Experience developing key performance metrics, including identifying trends, and implementing continual Improvement.
Brief Description of Duties:
The AVP for Infrastructure Services leads and manages the University’s technology infrastructure, including networks, data centers, and other related systems. The incumbent acts as VP in the absence of the CIO in strategic leadership and guidance at the executive level in critical areas of this position’s portfolio. This includes assisting the CIO by chairing or participating in meetings. Direct, plan and implement strategic and tactical enterprise IT initiatives under their purview, focusing on cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and service quality. Serve as a point of escalation for key issues, leading overall strategic planning to achieve organizational goals by prioritizing initiatives and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future technology projects in the positions’ portfolio. The Assistant Vice President of Infrastructure serves as a member of the Division of Information Technology's (DoIT) (https://it.stonybrook.edu/) Senior Leadership Team which is charged with providing strategic direction and priorities for the Division.
• Determine, formulate, and administer management policies and practices for providing critical University-wide Infrastructure, Networking, and Telephony services. Participate in the development of University-wide Information Technology strategic initiative planning and implementation with other DoIT leadership staff. Once policies are implemented, continue to evaluate annually and as needed. Serve on essential University-wide IT policymaking, proposing, and planning committees.
• On behalf of the CIO the AVP oversees the overall strategic planning for their portfolio. Oversight of executive-level projects. Responsible for assisting the CIO in leading IT as an enterprise-oriented and innovative organization. Oversee departmental change; provide leadership and strategic direction to the various functional teams to improve processes. Create vision and oversee the implementation of enterprise-wide technology service, support, and quality assurance. Communicate vision within the incumbent’s portfolio, monitor goals, and the execution of strategies to achieve these goals. Provide strategic planning and development of annual goals and objectives for DoIT. Oversee the development and reporting of IT performance metrics. Provide guidance and mentor to IT Senior Leadership Team members around continuous performance improvement opportunities and activities leading to higher performance standards and better service to the University community. Oversee regular departmental meetings to evaluate and analyze strategic goals and initiatives and foster team building.
• Establish the strategic direction for infrastructure, Networking, and Services. Provide Oversight for Infrastructure and Networking, across the University; identify best practices; develop and maintain a project plan/road map to fill the gap between current and best practices; research and implement new policies and procedures that align with sourcing strategies for information technology across the University. Oversee service contracts. Work with vendors to evaluate performance issues, and develop/implement performance improvement plans.
• Identify emerging information technologies, such as Cloud and AIto be assimilated, integrated, and introduced. Provide vision, direction and project management for existing and future projects. Oversee formulation and performance measures, defining short and long term strategy. Oversee the development of policy to meet operational objectives. Oversight of the implementation of new applications and changes to existing computer systems and software packages. Ensure that current and potential resources and services stay current and competitive with respect to IT.
• Oversee the development and administration of department budgets – these should be multi-year budgets, including staffing plans in concert with key IT initiatives and strategies. Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to customer and stakeholder problems. Oversight of purchasing, acquisition, inventory, and disposition of hardware and software for infrastructure. Monitor the security of all technology. Develop and implement appropriate professional development and training programs for their team. Oversee operations, support, and architecture for the computing and information technology functions; oversee, implement, and assess the feasibility of system enhancements. Oversight of strategic vendor dialogues to ensure alignment of vendor services with University network needs. Oversee IT Service Management and Service Operations. Serve as the coordinator and main of contact for the DoIT’s business continuity and disaster recovery efforts.
• Other duties or projects assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
