The **Enabling Technologies** business of Medtronic brings our navigation, imaging, robotics, powered surgical, and advanced energy technologies together into one cross-functional, collaborative operating unit to employ the full breadth of our talent, technologies, products, services, and solutions to address the needs of customers and patients across the globe.
Role Overview:
The Senior Principal Web-Based Software Architect is responsible for leading the design, development, and implementation of scalable, secure, and high-performance web-based software solutions across the enterprise. This role sets technical direction, defines architectural standards, and ensures alignment with business strategy and user experience goals.
Key Responsibilities:
+ **Architectural Leadership:**
+ Define and communicate the architectural vision for web-based platforms, ensuring consistency, scalability, and maintainability.
+ Lead the evaluation and selection of technologies, frameworks, and tools for web application development.
+ Oversee the integration of cloud-based and SaaS solutions, ensuring robust interoperability and data security.
+ **Technical Strategy & Execution:**
+ Collaborate with product management, engineering, and quality teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
+ Develop and maintain architectural standards, patterns, and best practices for web applications.
+ Guide teams in behavior-driven development (BDD), test automation, and modern software engineering practices.
+ **Portfolio & Platform Oversight:**
+ Provide technical leadership across multiple projects and product lines, ensuring adherence to architectural rails and optimizing clinical user experience.
+ Eliminate duplication and drive reuse of common building blocks across software and hardware architecture.
+ **Mentorship & Collaboration:**
+ Mentor software engineers and junior architects, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
+ Facilitate technical exchanges and knowledge sharing across teams and with external partners.
+ **Governance & Compliance:**
+ Ensure solutions comply with internal standards, regulatory requirements, and security policies.
+ Lead risk assessments and drive initiatives to accelerate compliance-related collateral using AI and automation.
Required Qualifications:
+ Baccalaureate degree and minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
+ Master's degree with a minimum of 8 years relevant experience OR PhD with 6 years relevant experience.

Skills required to be successful:
+ Advanced degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
+ 10+ years of experience in software architecture, with a focus on web-based and cloud-native applications.
+ Proven expertise in modern web technologies (e.g., JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Angular, Node.js), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and SaaS integration.
+ Strong understanding of systems engineering, integration, and user experience optimization.
+ Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex technical projects.
Desired Skills:
+ Experience with behavior-driven development (BDD) and test automation frameworks.
+ Knowledge of data governance, security, and compliance in healthcare or regulated industries.
+ Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
+ Expertise in the medical device industry or in the surgery field.
+ Expertise in developing and managing high-performing teams.
+ Expertise in Systems Engineering process and principals applied to software, hardware, and complex system design.
+ Expertise in using tools and models that facilitate system design.
+ Expertise in applying medical device regulations to product design.
+ Expertise in requirements development and safety risk management practices for medical device design.
+ Expertise in robotic-assisted surgery, computer-assisted surgery, anatomical imaging, powered drill, and/or radio frequency instrumentation technologies.
+ Expertise in planning and conducting user evaluations of product designs, analyzing data, documenting evaluation methods and results, and presenting design recommendations to product teams.
+ Expertise with software design and iterative (Agile) software development practices.
+ Expertise with hardware design.
+ Ability to provide creativity while solving complex problems without known solutions.
+ Ability to quickly prototype new concepts and ideas.
+ Ability to assess new technologies via comprehensive reviews of the state-of-the-art.
+ Good at communicating complex technical opportunities, challenges, and other information to project and organizational leaders in a concise but thorough fashion.
+ Skill in project management including leading a technical team as well as planning and estimation of tasks, milestones, resources, and budget.
+ Strong leadership skills and mentoring capabilities.
+ Strong ability to drive change – including design practices and processes – throughout the organization.
+ Ability to work with individuals from different geographic locations and cultures.
+ Ability to adapt to evolving business needs and technology trends.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$169,600.00 - $254,400.00
This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
The following benefits and additional compensation are available to all regular employees: Incentive plans, 401(k) plan plus employer contribution and match, Short-term disability, Paid time off, Paid holidays, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, Employee Assistance Program, Non-qualified Retirement Plan Supplement (subject to IRS earning minimums), and Capital Accumulation Plan (available to Vice Presidents and above, or subject to IRS earning minimums).
