PSU Senior Special Officer- Division of Board Members - R025369 Primary Location : DC-Washington : Employee Status : Regular Overtime Status : Exempt Job Type : Standard Work Shift: : 1st Shift : : Relocation Provided: : Yes Compensation Grade Low: : FR PAY GRADE 24 Compensation Grade High: : FR PAY GRADE 25 Minimum Salary: : $95,700.00 Maximum Salary: : $175,300.00 Posting Date : Nov 18, 2025 Position Description Minimum Education Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience Minimum Experience 4 Summary Senior Special Officer in the Protective Services Unit (PSU) is responsible for the safe transport and physical protection of the Chairman of the Board. The incumbent performs responsible driving techniques and technical protective support to ensure the safe and timely transportation of the Chairman's movements and ensures that the vehicles used in those movements are secure and well maintained. Provides input and recommendations on the safe operation of all PSU vehicles, including overseeing that routine maintenance and required repairs are completed as needed. Duties and Responsibilities Ensures the timely and efficient transportation of the Chairman by driving the PSU armored vehicles, including the limousine, lead, follow-up, or spare vehicle. Reviews the designated route in order to become thoroughly familiar with the time frames of the Chairman’s schedule and be familiar with the locations of evacuation sites, hospitals, and repair facilities. Assists in coordinating motorcades with local, state, and federal law enforcement personnel. Serves as an integral part of the emergency response system, with responsibility for implementing specific security functions in emergency situations. The incumbent is armed during assignments, exercises vigilance and agility, and is subject to potentially dangerous situations and hazards inherent in protective duties, taking whatever defensive actions are necessary to ensure the safe transportation of the Chairman. When necessary, travels in advance of protective detail to establish primary and secondary secure routes and to drive protective vehicle. In the company of a Senior Special Agent, performs the duties of a Special Agent when established minimum number of agents is not available. Duties include, but are not limited to, work in close proximity to the Chairman at the Board or public events, assist in the staffing and operations of the Protective Services Unit command post, man protective posts established by advance agent or supervisor, and work midnight residence security support.. Conducts research on armored protective vehicles to determine best vehicle suitable to the protective unit’s mission. Interacts with outside vendors and armoring specialists to troubleshoot problems associated with armoring and design. Inspects and manages all operational, safety, emergency, and convenience equipment of protective vehicles to ensure peak operating condition. Maintains appearance of vehicles and performs routine vehicle maintenance. Recognizes potential vehicle malfunction and recommends repair or replacement. Coordinates repairs and payments with appropriate vendor. During protective movements, searches protective vehicles and equipment and covers designated security post; assures integrity of personal luggage of protectee and traveling party; assists in establishing command post center by installing and maintaining radio equipment, and resolves problems associated with vehicles or equipment. Assists in the preparation of contracts for leased vehicles. Responds to telephone traffic; monitors radio communications, alarms, and cameras, and takes appropriate action concerning information received and incidents that occur. Maintains alarm systems through inspections and identifying problems, arranges for maintenance and repairs, and resolves problems that may arise. Responsible for ordering and inventory of supplies and equipment; and conducts security checks of individuals seeking admittance. Maintains and issues video surveillance equipment, first aid and trauma kits, foul weather gear, and weapons. Developmental duties and responsibilities: The incumbent receives practical on-the-job experience and formal training as necessary to achieve developmental goals. Position Requirements FR 24 - Requires bachelor's degree or equivalent and four (4) years of law enforcement experience, along with general knowledge of and experience in the operation of law enforcement vehicles. FR-25 - Requires a high school diploma and seven (7) years of law enforcement experience, along with general knowledge of and experience in the operation of law enforcement vehicles. Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and four (4) years of law enforcement experience, along with general knowledge of and experience in the operation of law enforcement vehicles. Must have a thorough knowledge of the mission, function, operation, policies, rules, regulations, and procedures of the PSU. Thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics (e.g. maneuverability, turning radius, braking distances, etc.) of protective vehicles and skill to operate them in a wide range of traffic, road, and weather conditions and a variety of hazardous and emergency situations are required. Must be able to perform routine vehicle maintenance, recognize potential vehicle malfunctions, troubleshoot mechanical problems, and recommend repairs. Familiarity with the various protective measures and techniques used by the PSU and ability to recognize physical hazards and dangers and take appropriate action to avoid or remove them in order to provide maximum protection and safety. Knowledge of the location and proper operation of fire and emergency equipment, security devices, and emergency medical techniques and procedures and the ability to take necessary action in the event of emergencies, remaining calm in the face of crisis. Must have knowledge of routes for security and convenience purposes, as well as their proximity to medical facilities and other services. Show self-initiative and be proactive in advancing and choosing the most desirable route for security and convenience purposes. Proficiency in the use of all firearms utilized by the PSU required. Must possess a high degree of tact and diplomacy to deal with a wide variety of individuals in order to obtain necessary assistance. Ability to communicate effectively with high level officials at the Board, government agencies, other law enforcement agencies, and the general public, etc., occasionally in stressful or extremely urgent situations. The incumbent must be able to meet the requirements for designation by the Board as a federal law enforcement officer under the provisions of the USA PATRIOT ACT of 2001 and qualify for a Top-Secret security clearance on the basis of a Single Background Investigation. Requires possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and an acceptable driving record. Periodic checks of driving records will be performed, and incumbent must provide the information necessary to verify that his/her diving record is acceptable. Promotion potential is very limited, as experience in this job ladder does not qualify as protective detail experience.
