    The University of Washington’s Department of Emergency Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Research Operations Program Manager (Research Coordinator 4) to provide strategic and operational leadership for the department’s clinical trials portfolio.

     

    With a workforce of over 200 and 85+ faculty members engaged in research, teaching, and patient care, the department maintains a rapidly growing research enterprise spanning multiple clinical sites.

     

    This position serves as the department’s senior administrative leader for clinical trials operations, overseeing the infrastructure, personnel, and systems that support human subjects research. The Program Manager develops and implements departmental strategies to ensure compliance, optimize efficiency, and promote research growth in alignment with institutional goals.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Program Leadership and Strategic Planning (25%)

    + Provide strategic direction and operational leadership for the department’s clinical trials program, including planning, staffing, and infrastructure development.

    + Serve as the primary administrative lead for clinical research operations and advise department leadership on policy, compliance, and process improvements.

    + Develop and implement standardized operating procedures, tools, and workflows to support consistent, high-quality research practices across sites.

    + Identify opportunities for program growth, resource optimization, and collaboration across departments and external research networks.

    + Represent the department on institutional research committees and working groups focused on clinical trials management and compliance.

    Staff and Team Management (25%)

    + Oversee a multidisciplinary team of research professionals, including research coordinators, study assistants, and regulatory specialists.

    + Supervise, mentor, and evaluate staff and subordinate supervisors, setting clear expectations and ensuring accountability for performance and professional development.

    + Lead recruitment, onboarding, and training initiatives to support workforce growth and retention.

    + Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and learning-oriented team culture that promotes research excellence.

    Operational Oversight and Compliance (25%)

    + Maintain strategic oversight of all departmental clinical trials to ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations.

    + Develop and manage departmental policies for human subjects protection, data integrity, and audit readiness.

    + Oversee IRB submissions, renewals, and modifications, ensuring consistent and accurate regulatory documentation.

    + Serve as the department’s primary point of contact for internal and external audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.

    + Partner with the Office of Research and UWHR to interpret new regulatory or policy changes and implement required updates.

    Fiscal and Resource Management (15%)

    + Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial tracking for the department’s clinical trials portfolio.

    + Monitor study budgets and ensure fiscal compliance with sponsor and institutional requirements.

    + Collaborate with finance and grants management teams to align staffing, contracts, and resources with program priorities.

    + Evaluate cost-efficiency and propose process improvements to enhance sustainability and accountability.

    Faculty and Researcher Engagement (10%)

    + Serve as a senior liaison to principal investigators and faculty conducting clinical trials.

    + Partner with investigators to facilitate study start-up, regulatory approval, and operational implementation.

    + Support faculty with strategic planning for new research initiatives and funding opportunities.

    + Coordinate the Emergency Medicine Interdisciplinary Research Committee (EMIRC), overseeing reviews, feedback, and reporting of research proposals.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    + Master’s degree in health sciences, public health and four years of relevant experience.

     

    _Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration._

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    + Previous clinical or nursing experience in emergency medicine, acute care, or critical care environments.

    + Experience collaborating with industry sponsors, contract research organizations, and federally funded networks.

    + Demonstrated success developing research operations systems or infrastructure at the program or departmental level.

    + At least five years of progressively responsible experience managing clinical trials or research programs, including supervision of staff and oversight of regulatory processes.

    + Demonstrated experience with program or departmental leadership in human subjects research.

    + Strong skills in organizational strategy, resource management, and team development.

    + Proven ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and institutional research policies.

    + Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

     

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $90,156.00 annual

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $121,200.00 annual
