    As stewards for the outdoor properties of the U-M’s Ann Arbor Campus, Grounds Services provides horticultural and grounds keeping maintenance. Our specialized crews are dedicated professionals who pride themselves in caring for the university’s natural areas.

    Responsibilities*

    + Collect, haul and dispose of refuse, debris, and pick up litter, and remove postings from light poles.

    + Clean and maintain hand and power equipment.

    + Install and maintain chain and post.

    + Trim, prune, plant, spray and remove shrubs, trees and brush.

    + Operate power equipment such as tractors, loaders, leaf removal equipment, hand mowers, riding mowers, walk-behind equipment, sweepers and other motorized vehicles and equipment.

    + Remove snow from entryways, walks, steps, and parking lots utilizing shovels, snow blowers, tractors with a power broom or blade, trucks with sprayers and spreaders.

    + Clean, maintain and perform minor repairs to light equipment such as the oiling and greasing of tractors and other power equipment as well as adjustments to tractor attachments.

    + Repair University roads and hardscape using cold patch and other materials.

    + Mow, irrigate, fertilize, rake and maintain grass areas.

    + Mix and apply herbicides or fertilizers in properly calibrated proportions to lawns and landscapes.

    + Interpret architectural landscape plans and specifications.

    + Participate in landscape projects, including new construction and renovations.

    + Routinely inspect all landscape areas to ensure proper care and maintenance.

    + Assist in alternative deicing program by making and applying salt brine and maintaining the liquid deicing equipment.

    + Keep abreast of new developments in Turfgrass and Horticulture practices, such as new products, equipment and current cultural techniques.

    + Coordinate the work of assigned assistants.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Minimum two (2) years of Groundskeeper experience.

    + Must have and maintain a valid driver's license with no more than 7 points.

    + Ability to obtain upon employment and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card.

    + Must have and maintain Michigan Department of Agriculture Certified Pesticide Applicator License with both 3b and 6 categories, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of start date in position.

    + Must have and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with Air Brake endorsement and no restrictions, or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of start date in position.

    + Knowledge of equipment maintenance and operation of various grounds equipment (loaders, mowers, etc.).

    + Experience transporting and simultaneously operating pesticide spraying equipment weighing up to 75 pounds, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

    + Must be available weekends and after hours for snow removal.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Knowledge of soil erosion and sediment control measures.

    + Knowledge of Plant and Turf establishment and maintenance.

     

    Work Schedule

     

    Work schedule could be any of the following based on the vacancy at time of hiring: Monday - Friday, 6:00am - 2:30pm or 4:00am - 12:30pm Tuesday - Saturday, 6:00am - 2:30pm or 4:00am - 12:30pm Tuesday - Friday, 6:00am - 3:30pm and Saturday 6:00am - 10:00am Tuesday - Friday 4:00am - 1:30pm and Saturday 6:00am - 10:00am

     

    Union Affiliation

     

    This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
