    Job Summary

    Miami Fort Generating Station is looking for a Journeyman Instrumentation and Controls Technician and/or a Journeyman Electrician to perform in-depth troubleshooting and repairs to equipment. Qualified applicants should have a minimum of 5 years of exposure to industrial instrumentation and controls and/or electrical systems. The candidate should be adept at analyzing prints, schematics, single lines, wiring diagrams, etc., and resolving issues using those resources and their troubleshooting skills.

    Job Description

    DUTIES:

    Under general supervision, on a shift work schedule, inspects, tests, adjusts, troubleshoots, calibrates and repairs process controls when equipment is in or out of service. Works closely with station operators while making repairs and adjustments to control circuits. Performs any of the duties of I&C Apprentice and in addition, performs duties such as:

     

    Operating valves to properly cut trips and control equipment in and out of service.

     

    Blowing out lines for primary metering, controls and trips using air or other fluid medium to keep lines open for proper operation.

     

    Troubleshooting, testing, calibrating and repairing various types of electrical control circuits such as analog, digital, or distributed control systems and protective trip or interlock circuits. Must be adept at using a multimeter to perform these functions.

     

    Running conduit: installing necessary clamps and supports; pulling conductors and making connections; locating trouble on power and control circuits and making necessary repairs.

     

    Meggering and testing insulation resistance on electrical equipment; adjusting and renewing brushes on rotating equipment.

     

    Repairing and adjusting various low and high pressure hydraulic and pneumatic control systems and components.

     

    Installing new control equipment.

     

    Working in close cooperation with employees of other departments, vendors and others for the purpose of troubleshooting, repairing, and modifying control systems and components.

     

    Directing others in tests of equipment for performance, efficiency, or calibration purposes. Analyzing results of tests and making recommendations for optimum performance or repair of plant equipment.

     

    Maintaining equipment associated with nuclear radioactive sources, running tests, and calibrating as required.

     

    Maintaining software changes for process control systems.

     

    Troubleshooting and making repairs to controls containing higher voltages such as exciters, uninterruptible power supplies, variable speed drives, etc.

     

    Verifying field-marked process control system drawings prior to their submittal for changes.

     

    Troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating Stack Gas Emission monitoring equipment such as Opacity monitors and Continuous Emission Monitors.

     

    Maintaining safe work practices utilizing all safety-related equipment, materials, and training.

     

    Instructing and training employees in any classification in their work.

     

    Installing meters, relays, recorders, switches and similar equipment on switchboards and making necessary wiring connections

     

    Taping high voltage connections (above 6900v).

     

    Performing similar or less-skilled work.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Must have all the qualification of Maintenance Apprentice and, in addition:

    Must have a minimum of 5 years of exposure to industrial instrumentation and controls and/or electrical systems

     

    Must be able to work from specifications, detailed drawings and blueprints.

     

    Must have a thorough knowledge of meters, gauges, and other instruments and controls, together with associated pneumatic, hydraulic or electrical connections; and a knowledge of the tools used in their maintenance, adjustment and repair.

     

    Must be able to climb ladders and work at higher elevations on platforms, scaffolds, grating, etc. Must be able to work in all-weather climates and enter confined spaces.

     

    Must be accurate in making wiring connections and capable of performing work in a neat and skillful manner.

     

    Must be able to measure, cut, thread and bend pipe of conduit of all sizes.

     

    Must be able to use measuring instruments like micrometers, calipers, screw pitch gauges, thickness gauges, levels, etc.

     

    Must have a thorough working knowledge of methods used in testing, calibrating, troubleshooting and repairing instruments, controls, analyzers and other mechanism and equipment.

     

    Must have a good knowledge of electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic circuits and circuit components.

     

    Must have a good understanding of principles involved in combustion of coal and fuel oil and the generation and utilization of steam.

     

    Must have a good working knowledge of the steam turbines, boilers balance of plant and the functions of the equipment located therein.

     

    Must have a thorough knowledge of the principles of operation of all water-treating equipment.

     

    Must be able to understand and use manufacturers’ software to maintain or alter process control systems.

     

    Must be capable of directing the work of several employees in an assignment.

     

    Must be able to work overtime as required.

     

    Successful candidate must pass POSS/MASS pre-employment test.
