Responsibilities
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) supports the daily clinical operations of a busy outpatient surgery clinic by providing high-quality patient care, assisting providers, and ensuring efficient clinical workflow. The CMA performs both administrative and clinical tasks in accordance with clinic policies, Iowa scope-of-practice guidelines, and OSHA/CLIA standards.
Clinical Duties
+ Assist surgeons and advanced practice providers during patient exams and in-office procedures.
+ Prepare and maintain exam rooms, ensuring sterile or aseptic technique when required.
+ Collect and document patient medical histories, vitals, medications, and allergies.
+ Perform clinical tasks such as:
+ Administering injections
+ Wound care and dressing changes
+ Suture/staple removal
+ Pre-operative and post-operative patient education
+ Specimen collection and point-of-care testing
+ Manage surgical supply inventory and ensure availability of necessary equipment.
Administrative Duties
+ Schedule appointments, diagnostic tests, and pre-op clearances.
+ Accurately update patient charts in the electronic medical record (EMR).
+ Process referrals, prior authorizations, and follow-up correspondence.
+ Support billing and coding documentation as requested.
Qualifications
+ Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program (required).
+ Current CMA certification from one of the following approved credentialing bodies:
+ AAMA – Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)
+ NHA – Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)
+ NCCT – National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA)
+ NAHP – Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA)
+ AMT / AAH / ARMA – Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)
+ Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification or ability to obtain prior to start date.
+ Previous clinical experience in a surgical, procedural, or specialty clinic preferred but not required.
+ Strong communication, organizational, and multitasking skills
