Position Summary
At the Long Island State Veterans Home, our Assistant Director of Physical Therapy is a valuable member of our team.
Under the supervision of the Director of Rehabilitation Services, The Assistant Director of Physical Therapy plans, organizes, supervises and directs all Staff Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Pathologist, Rehabilitation Per Diem Therapist and Rehab Aides assigned within the Department. The Assistant Director of Physical Therapy supervises designated units, working closely with referring physicians and residents and defines, implements and evaluates physical therapy care services. The Assistant Director of Physical Therapy provides direct care to selected residents and functions as a resource for staff members.
Duties of an Assistant Director of Physical Therapy may include the following but are not limited to:
In conjunction with the Director of Rehabilitation Services orients new professional/classified employees assigned to the area.
Schedules and prepares for resident treatments as referred/ prescribed by physicians.
Assists staff in assessing resident's status, establishing proper treatment techniques, and developing realistic goals.
Functions in a collegial relationship with medical staff and other disciplines in coordinating all aspects of physical therapy resident care.
Works closely with the nursing supervisors, physicians and all LISVH department supervisors to promote a good working relationship between relevant departments. Oversees all staff completion of all appropriate documentation including MDS, CCP, VA 1010 forms.
Completes necessary reports, inventories, equipment requests, etc. as assigned by the Director of Rehabilitation Services including quality assurance reporting.
Keeps the Director of Rehabilitation Services informed as to all activities and problems within the assigned area of supervision.
Oversees the coordination of all rehabilitative educational activities including student affiliates, class lectures, inservices, etc. Oversees and implements rehabilitative educational programs as required to serve in-house needs.
The Assistant Director of Physical Therapy provides direct care to selected residents and functions as a resource for staff members.
Recommends action to the Director of Rehabilitation Services regarding equipment modification, selection, evaluation and essential construction within the department and its appropriateness for geriatric rehabilitation.
Assists in the planning of new programs and offers recommendations regarding facility, equipment, and personnel needs.
Acts as Director of Rehabilitation Services in his/her absence. Attends all administrative meetings and supervises staff in the Rehabilitative Department including Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Pathologist, Audiologist and Per Diem Therapist. Reports to Medical Director as needed.
Responsible for assuring appropriate staffing within the Rehabilitative Department during the entire working day, assures that all assessments and evaluations are completed in proper time frames, and that documentation is accurate and prompt.
Makes recommendations to the Director of Rehabilitation Services pertaining to employee performance programs/evaluations for professional staff and completes performance programs/evaluations for classified staff.
Responsible for maintaining physical therapy services in accordance with standards established by the medical staff, the American Physical Therapy Association, and any State, local and Federal standards which may apply. Directly responsible for clinical and technical aspects of the department.
Responsible for the planning, coordination and oversight of telehealth clinic with the veterans administration (VA). Obtains approval, coordinates vendor orders and appropriate follow up of DME for in house residents, ADHC registrants and residents being discharged to the community.
Responsible for the daily and periodic inspection and maintenance of all equipment being used within the assigned area of supervision and makes recommendations as necessary to the Director of Rehabilitation Services.
Designs and implements all approved research studies along with Medical Staff, Nursing, Social Work or other Rehabilitation Therapies in accordance with SUNY Stony Brook guidelines.
Responsible for development and analysis of continuous quality improvement projects in the department. Reports results and make recommendations to the Director of Rehabilitation Services.
Required Qualifications** **:
Doctoral Degree in Physical Therapy from an approved and accredited institution. New York State Physical Therapy Licensure/ Registration required. Four years of experience in a skilled nursing facility, with a specialized knowledge of geriatrics or rehabilitation and teaching experience.

May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:
+ The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.
+ Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from the Long Island State Veterans Home Employee Health Department.
+ Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
+ Provide a copy of the required license(s)/certificate(s).
