Guidance Counselor - Seneca Intermediate School

Position Summary
The Guidance Counselor will provide academic, social-emotional, and college/career support with a specific focus on meeting the unique needs of Native American students. This role requires cultural awareness, strong relational skills, and a commitment to inclusive practices that respect tribal sovereignty, traditions, and community partnerships.
This is a 10-month position. The salary will be $49,037 to $89,059 annually, based on experience and in accordance with the current, negotiated Salamanca Teachers Association (STA) Contract. Key Responsibilities
+ Promote learning excellence by helping students develop academic skills, confidence, and pathways for success while recognizing culturally rooted strengths.
+ Build respectful, trusting relationships with Native American students, families, tribal education departments, and community members.
+ Provide individual and group counseling that is trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and grounded in relationship-building.
+ Use effective communication to coordinate with teachers, administrators, and tribal partners to support student needs.
+ Collaborate with families and tribal community representatives to ensure services align with cultural values and support systems.
+ Encourage continuous improvement by using data and feedback from students, families, and tribal partners to refine counseling practices.
+ Assist students with academic planning, study skills, attendance improvement, and goal setting.
+ Support transitions to high school, college, workforce, or vocational paths, including scholarships and programs specific to Native American students.
+ Facilitate restorative conversations and conflict resolution that emphasize respect, community, and cultural perspectives.
+ Maintain accurate, confidential records and comply with legal, ethical, and cultural guidelines.
+ All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
+ Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Education, or a related field with valid New York State certification or the ability to obtain it.
+ Demonstrated commitment to serving Native American students with cultural humility and respect.
+ Strong skills in effective communication, collaboration, and relationship-building with diverse communities.
+ Knowledge of culturally responsive practices, historical trauma, and strengths-based approaches for Native American youth.
+ Commitment to learning excellence and continuous improvement in student support services.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Experience working with Native American students, tribal education programs, or Indigenous communities.
+ Familiarity with tribal sovereignty, community protocols, and culturally rooted support practices.
+ Training in trauma-informed care, restorative practices, or culturally responsive counseling models.
+ Knowledge of the ASCA National Model.
