    Talen Energy has a job opening for a Chemical Engineer. The position will be located at the Brandon Shores Power Plant in Baltimore, MD (Pasadena area). Brandon Shores is a coal fired generating station. We are looking for candidates with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or equivalent with experience; 2 to 5 years’ experience in a related technical discipline; technical expertise to support critical activities for the generation or utilization of electrical energy.

     

    The expected salary range for this position is $95,000 to $115,000. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors as permitted by law. Successful candidates will also participate in Talen Energy’s Short-Term Incentive program.

    Job Summary

    The Chemical Engineer is responsible for supporting the operation and optimization of key process systems within an industrial power generation facility, including emissions control and wastewater treatment systems. This role plays an integral part in maintaining safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant plant performance.

     

    Working both independently and collaboratively, the Chemical Engineer applies technical knowledge of chemical and environmental engineering principles to monitor processes, troubleshoot system issues, and recommend improvements that enhance reliability, efficiency, and compliance.

     

    Responsibilities include overseeing chemical and water treatment programs, supporting the operation of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) and biological wastewater systems, and ensuring effective water chemistry control for boilers and related equipment such as polishing filters and demineralizers. The Chemical Engineer will also contribute to day-to-day operational coordination, assist with environmental compliance activities, and provide technical guidance to operations and maintenance teams.

     

    This position offers the opportunity to lead small technical projects, contribute to process improvement initiatives, and play a key role in ensuring consistent plant performance within a regulated industrial environment.

    Primary Responsibilities

    1. Gives daily guidance on the operation and maintenance of the biological FGD WWTP and scrubber systems.

    2. Gives guidance on boiler and other equipment water chemistry needs.

    3. Evaluates and develops process improvement strategies and environmental control initiatives to enhance system performance and regulatory compliance.

    4. Oversees ordering of needed VOM chemicals.

    5. Help manage the plant air and water permits to assure compliance in operations and assists in reporting.

    6. Provides technical guidance to engineers and operations personnel, helping to establish objectives and support continuous improvement initiatives across the department.

    7. Assesses the financial implication of decisions and manages resource requirements and business needs for projects and technical solutions.

    8. Solves complex technical problems using analytical methods, process data, and industry best practices to identify innovative solutions that improve system reliability and environmental performance.

    9. Interprets internal/external technical issues and recommends best practices in own discipline.

    10. Ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards, applying regulatory knowledge to plan and execute activities that meet operational requirements.

    11. May lead functional teams or projects to achieve milestones and objectives and will occasionally present topical matters to senior leadership of the plant, Business Line or Department.

    12. Works independently with guidance on only the most complex tasks.

    Education & Experience Required:

    1. B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and two to five years of experience in an industrial setting.

    2. In-depth understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals, applicable design codes.

    Basic Qualifications

    1. Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or equivalent with experience. Discipline required will vary by the specific job requirements.

    2. 2 – 5 years’ experience in related technical discipline.

    3. Strong understanding of chemical processes, water treatment systems, and environmental compliance within an industrial or utility setting.

    4. Is fully capable to work with a team of licensed WWTP operations employees.

    Preferred Qualifications

    1. At least 5 years of related experience preferred with biological wastewater treatment plant systems.

    2. Experience in and active participation with industry organization within field of expertise.

    3. Power plant O&M experience.

    Physical & Mental Demands:

    The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

    Physical Demands:

    At the Power Plant facility and in/out door environment, must be able to work in adverse conditions that may include, but not be limited to the following:

    • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to climb stairs, ladders, and work on elevated platforms. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

    • Must be able to lift 45 pounds overhead and 50 pounds from the floor to 36 inches.

    • Must be willing to travel to other facilities.

    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color distinction with vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

    • Must be able to work around high voltage.

    • Must have manual dexterity and ability to manipulate keyboards.

    • Must be capable of wearing respirators and working in dusty environments.

    • On occasions employee may be required to work at heights to collect data or conduct other assessments, where guarding or fall protection is required.

    Mental Demands:

    While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills, read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve complex problems, observe and interpret situations, use math and mathematical reasoning; deal with changing, intensive deadlines, and interact with internal and external clients. Must be able to concentrate while under time constraints.

    Work Environment:

    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.

     

    The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and wet or humid conditions. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock and vibration.

     

    Exposure to hazards associated with power and hand tools, dust, fumes, high pressure steam, high temperatures and confined spaces; and may be regularly subject to external environmental conditions such as cold, heat dust, snow or noise and fumes from equipment or chemicals.

     

    Occupationally hazardous noise exposure may occur in the power plant or other locations where heavy industrial equipment is in use.
