    General Function

    The Custodial Services– Recycling & Event Support Lead supports the University’s recycling program by retrieving all cardboard from University buildings and provides leadership to a small team of student, part time, and/or custodians. Responsibilities include the movement, delivery, and storage of furniture, supplies, and equipment, including event setups, unloading trucks, maintaining storage areas, running errands, assisting with training, managing inventory, and handling surplus or recycling items. The position also performs all duties of a Custodial Lead and Custodian I tasks when required, including snow and ice removal, and may assume the duties of the immediate supervisor in his/her absence, as assigned.

     

    Description of Primary Duties

     

    This position is only available to current, regular, full-time employees of Missouri State University who are represented by the IBEW .

     

    1. Removes all recyclable materials from buildings by collecting the recyclable materials from the various labeled containers, transporting the recyclable materials to designated outside recycling dumpsters, and emptying the recyclable materials into the dumpster, ensuring that the dumpster is locked when after dumping.

    2. Prepares classrooms, meeting rooms, auditoriums, arenas and outdoor locations for special events and activities by moving existing furniture and tarping floors (if necessary), and delivering/setting up (erecting) equipment, tables, chairs, portable steps, stages, podiums, curtains, sound shells, and other specifically requested items following set-up plans, diagrams, or verbal instructions.

    3. Unloads delivery trucks or picks up cleaning supplies or other items from the custodial storeroom and distributes those items for immediate or future use by manually lifting the cleaning supplies and carrying and/or transporting them using a two-wheel hand truck to the designated storage facility or work area.

    4. Provides leadership to small team by directing activities, addressing minor performance or attendance issues, escalating unresolved issues to the Custodial Supervisor, developing draft annual performance appraisals, and assists the supervisor in providing the appraisal to the assigned staff.

    5. Evaluates the recycling program and makes recommendations for improvements to increase operational efficiency and effectiveness.

    6. Provides continuity of custodial services during personnel absences or under emergency conditions by performing Custodial I duties as described in the Custodial I job description, when required.

    7. Contributes to the overall success of the assigned department by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    SUPERVISION

    The Custodial Lead provides operational oversight of Custodial Apprentice, Custodian I, temporary, and student employees while participating with those employees in performing similar duties.

    Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

    Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. Additional experience beyond the minimum may be substituted for the minimum educational requirements.

     

    Experience: At least three years of experience in custodial, recycling, or other related services is required. One year of supervisory experience is preferred. Additional education and experience beyond the minimum requirements may be substituted for either custodial or supervisory experience.

     

    Skills: Requires excellent time management and organizational abilities to coordinate recycling routes, deliveries, inventory, and event setups. Physical stamina and a commitment to safety are essential for lifting, moving, and setting up furniture and equipment, as well as performing snow and ice removal. The position also requires skill in logistics, materials handling, and inventory management, including unloading trucks and maintaining orderly storage areas. Must be able to read English language sufficiently to understand written work orders and instructions. Problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and reliability are required. Good customer service and interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication skills are required. Must possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Computer literacy and basic computer skills are required.

     

    Effort: Maximum physical exertion is required on a daily basis in this job. Requires daily physical exertion, including frequently lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds unaided on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds occasionally with use of a mechanical life device or using a two-person lift. Prolonged walking or standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching. Must have physical mobility sufficient to operate manual and electrically powered equipment and machines to include dollies, pallet jacks, scrubbers, buffers, vacuums, and forklifts. Accessing certain areas may involve climbing ladders or stairs and working in confined spaces. Work is performed indoors and out-of-doors. This position is classified as essential and must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather; as determined by the supervisor.

     

    Other: Scope of the job requires exposure to and use of chemical compounds for cleaning which may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, application and use are not properly followed. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Position is subject to respond to after-hours emergencies and mandatory overtime.
