    Position Overview:

    The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) Operations Division is seeking a Department Head and Manager of the Area Management Department to join our team. The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is a science Directorate at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. LCLS is the world¿s first hard X-ray free electron laser (FEL). LCLS is operated as an international user facility, attracting hundreds of scientists from around the world to conduct first-of-a-kind experiments to study fundamental processes of chemistry, technology, and life itself. A suite of 10 instruments for exploiting the unique LCLS scientific capabilities has been produced.

     

    The LCLS Area Management Department Head is responsible for supervising and managing a group of Science and Engineering Associates with diverse skills in support of day-to-day operations of the facility and in coordination with ongoing installation and upgrade activities. The Department Head is expected to work within the Operations Division to prioritize and coordinate efforts. The Department Head will interface with LCLS leadership and be a member of the LCLS Operations Leadership Team to provide the most efficient support possible. This position reports directly to the LCLS Director of Experimental Operations.

     

    This position also provides support as an ESH Coordinator for the LCLS Directorate and functionally reports to the LCLS ESH&Q Manager. In this position you will work with instrument scientists, area managers, engineers, technical support staff, and management to ensure safe operations and compliance with ES&H requirements, with an emphasis on chemical safety. You will support the development and review of safety policies and procedures, the application of training programs, and implementation of Work Planning & Control processes across LCLS. Finally, you will advocate on behalf of LCLS while interfacing with subject matter experts and other staff from SLAC's ES&H Division in the review and update of lab-wide policies and procedures or the evaluation of specific safety issues.

    Your specific responsibilities include:

    Key Functions of the Research Technical Manager

    + Provide management and coordination of administrative and operations related functions for assigned research area(s) engaged in developing, advancing and applying science, engineering and technical research to innovate and deliver solutions in support of organizational goals. Manage staff at least 50% of the time to achieve the research and teaching mission, goals and objectives of the unit. Partner with faculty leadership on departmental affairs.

    + Provide strategic planning for own work group; participate with senior managers in higher level strategic planning. Communicate operational objectives and assignments and delegate to staff.

    + Manage the daily operations of a assigned area(s) which include recruiting, hiring, training, developing, evaluating and setting priorities of staff; coordinate business, technical, and educational activities for direct reports.

    + Oversee interdepartmental activities, projects and efforts by applying advanced technical and professional knowledge. Serve as the initial managerial escalation point for problems from clients and other staff.

    + Manage project budgets, schedules, and resources. Oversee preparation of periodic financial and technical reports and operating plans.

    + Interface with clients to determine project requirements. Establish service level agreements with clients.

    + Monitor scientific, engineering and/or technology trends and evaluate emerging technologies to recommend for adoption and implementation.

    + Communicate and implement policies, procedures, best practices, recommendations and guidelines in compliance with established University administrative policies and procedures.

    LCLS Area Manager and Operations Leadership Duties

    + Line manage the LCLS Area Managers

    + Prioritize Area Manager activities work and communicate to the team

    + Set priorities while resolving conflicting requests serving at the initial managerial escalation point for issues from the Area Managers

    + Interface with Operations Management as a member of the LCLS Operations Leadership Team

    + Annual and on ongoing performance guidance providing career guidance and development opportunities to staff

    + Oversee the work of Area Managers

    + Set operating efficiency standards for Area Managers and work to maintain this level of support.

    + Develop training sessions, training manuals and/or procedures;lead development of Area Manager skills

    + Establish, communicate and enforce compliance with health and safety policies and procedures

    To be successful in this position you will bring:

    + Bachelor¿s degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required.

    + Experience as a subject matter expert in chemical safety or industrial hygiene, plus the ability and willingness to develop into a subject matter expert in radiation safety, electrical safety, and pressure safety if not already.

    + Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/ risk assessments, and most complex data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.

    + Experience leading or overseeing the work of technical staff.

    + Understanding of relevant scientific, engineering, or technical disciplines.

    + Ability to problem solve.

    + Ability to synthesize and articulate technical and scientific methodologies, specifications, and information.

    + Experience leading scientific, engineering, or technical research projects or programs.

    + Knowledge of emerging technologies, trends, methodologies, and resource management principles.

    + Ability to work and communicate effectively with others.

    + Strong customer relationship and consensus building skills.

    + Ability to influence and establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment.

    + Ability to resolve issues quickly and make decisions that meet university objectives in a collaborative culture.

    + Experience applying complex scientific and engineering principles and practices to perform technical services and support.

    + Ability to write clear documentation, perform administrative duties, and research protocol maintenance related to research studies and/or scientific/engineering projects.

    + Extensive experience overseeing a laboratory space or unit and supervising the work of technicians and other staff associated with the group

    + Strong customer relationship and consensus building skills

    + Ability to problem solve

    + Ability to communicate, liaise, and work with staff, students, faculty, and outside vendors.

    + Ability to effectively supervise and train a diverse work staff.

    The expected pay range for this position is $159,889 - $191,732 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
