Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo—shaping the future by preserving heritage, discovering new knowledge, and sharing our resources with the world. The Office of Protection Services' (OPS) works carefully on a daily basis to balance the safety and security of our visitors and employees with ease of access to the Smithsonian. Responsibilities This position is located in the National Zoological Park Police Unit of the Office of Protection Services within the Smithsonian Institution. The Supervisory Police Officer assists with all functions necessary for the accomplishment of the mission such as the planning, directing, controlling and supervising the operation. In this position, you will: Provide leadership, direction, and staff supervision to all the components of their functional unit. Investigate complaints of crimes, accidents, and incidents occurring within the park while taking immediate action to provide the safety of employees and visitors. Train personnel in accepted police techniques in the enforcement of regulations, laws and ordinances. The incumbent must be able to qualify and maintain a proficiency in the use of weapons issued to him/her as part of his/her duty requirements. Qualifications Basic Qualifications: Experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. In addition to the basic qualification requirement above: Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the NZ-07 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as: Training police officers on regulations, policy, and guidance to prevent and detect, violations of the law; Patrolling parking areas; Facilitating orderly flow of traffic: Assisting the public with information; AND Maintaining appropriate records and reports on accidents, incidents, and emergency situations.
