    Job Summary

    The Intern, Data Science & Visualization supports the User Experience team for data and research at the Utah System of Higher Education ( USHE ). This role develops compelling data narratives through visual and written storytelling and designs interactive dashboards for data exploration. The position requires familiarity with data visualization techniques, front-end development, and analytical methods. Project tasks are mainly completed through Tableau and Canva, with an opportunity to apply HTML , CSS , and JavaScript in developing an updated public data portal for USHE’s website. SQL may also be used to retrieve and prepare data for specific projects.

    Responsibilities

    + Develops interactive data narratives and dashboards using front-end development tools.

    + Transforms and processes data to create visualizations, such as charts and tables.

    + Designs static visual elements for data narratives and dashboards.

    + Writes brief summaries of the data to include in data narratives and dashboards.

    + Works with researchers to ensure data narratives are effectively communicating their findings.

    + Assists in the enhancement and ongoing maintenance of USHE’s public data portal.

    + Prioritizes work to complete tasks in an efficient manner.

    + All other tasks as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Qualifications

    + Currently pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD degree in data science, computer science, statistics, or a relevant field at a USHE institution.

    Skills & Abilities:

    + Experience applying data science, computer science, or statistical methods to analyze and visualize data in academic or professional settings.

    + Familiarity with Tableau; experience designing dashboards is a plus.

    + Familiarity with Canva or similar design tools for creating static visuals in data narratives.

    + Competency or ability to learn HTML , CSS , JavaScript, and SQL .

    + Interest in creating compelling data narratives and dashboards.

    + Strong written and verbal communication skills to summarize data for non-technical audiences.

    + Willingness to learn and adapt to feedback from team members.

    + Understanding of confidentiality and professionalism in handling sensitive data.

    + Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
