    Job Description

    Position Overview

    The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction provides leadership, vision, and oversight for all instructional programs, curriculum development, assessment systems, professional learning, and instructional technology across the District. The role ensures that all teaching and learning align with New York State standards, District goals, and continuous improvement practices. This individual serves as a key member of the District's leadership team.

     

    Required NYS Certification

     

    + New York State School District Leader (SDL) or School District Administrator (SDA)

    Qualifications

    + Minimum of five to seven years' experience as a building and/or district-level administrator.

    + Minimum five to seven years of teaching experience.

    + Strong academic credentials.

    + Demonstrated leadership abilities.

    + Knowledge of NYS Learning Standards, STEPS, program evaluation, and accountability systems.

    + Expertise in curriculum development, instructional practices, and assessment.

    + Experience leading District-wide instructional initiatives.

    + Strong background in data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement frameworks.

    + Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate District programs.

    + Effective communicator with strong interpersonal and organizational leadership skills.

    + Lead, supervise, and evaluate instructional staff and District-wide programs.

    Responsibilities & Duties

     

    Instructional Leadership

     

    + Direct a District-wide program of continuous improvement across all instructional areas and grade levels.

    + Oversee curriculum development, alignment, review, and implementation.

    + Direct the creation, editing, and publication of curriculum guides and instructional materials.

    + Provide leadership for innovative instructional practices, including technology integration and individualized learning.

    + Support principals in ensuring high-quality instruction and assist in evaluating assistant principals.

    + Supervise directors, department chairpersons, principals, and instructional program staff as assigned.

    + Oversee development of grade-level and subject-area expectations and standards.

    + Examine educational research and make recommendations to the Superintendent.

    + Oversee the master schedule development to ensure educationally sound programming.

    + Supervise the coordination of program articulation among and between schools.

     

    Assessment & Accountability

     

    + Direct all District assessment systems, including state testing, local assessments, benchmarks, and progress monitoring tools.

    + Oversee the District assessment calendar.

    + Analyze student achievement data to identify trends and areas of need.

    + Monitor progress toward annual District goals.

    + Ensure compliance with NYSED requirements and federal accountability systems.

    + Oversee preparation of student progress reports and required records.

    + Support schools in developing improvement plans aligned with accountability measures.

     

    Professional Development & Staff Support

     

    + Direct New Teacher Orientation, Summer Curriculum Development, Summer Institutes, Mentor Teacher Program, and other training initiatives.

    + Plan, coordinate, and evaluate District-wide professional learning programs.

    + Provide training on curriculum, instruction, assessment, and improvement practices.

    + Lead strategic planning for staff development days.

    + Direct in-service programs for teachers and principals through workshops, conferences, committees, and consultant support.

    + Collaborate with principals on yearly observations of teachers and those on improvement plans.

     

    Data, Technology & System Management

     

    + Direct data analysis activities and instructional improvement initiatives.

    + Oversee the Technology Department and ensure alignment of instructional technology with District needs.

    + Ensure compliance with all state reporting requirements associated with instruction and assessment.

    + Support integration of digital curriculum tools and instructional technology.

    + Oversee all data reporting requirements.

     

    Budget & Resource Management

     

    + Prepare, direct, and supervise budgets for curriculum, staff development, and research.

    + Direct the study and selection of textbooks, instructional materials, educational equipment, and supplies.

    + Oversee grants related to instruction (e.g., Title funding).

     

    Communication & Collaboration

     

    + Work collaboratively with building and District administrators to ensure success of instructional programs.

    + Communicate curriculum updates, instructional expectations, and data findings to staff, the Board of Education, and the community.

    + Serve as liaison to BOCES and the New York State Education Department for curriculum-related matters.

    + Respond to inquiries from residents and parents regarding instructional programs and policies.

    + Facilitate committees and task forces related to curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

     

    Strategic Planning & Leadership

     

    + Develop, monitor, and implement the District's long-range education plan.

    + Lead planning for District Goal Implementation, including mid-year reviews and attainment reports.

    + May serve as Chief School Officer in the Superintendent's absence.

    + Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.
