    Description of Work Unit

    The Office of Engagement and Extension ( OEE ) is a dynamic catalyst for learning, discovery, and impact across Colorado, the United States, and worldwide. As Colorado State University’s front door to the world, OEE is evolving to meet the changing needs of learners, communities, and industries through bold, accessible, and forward-thinking approaches. With a mission rooted in CSU’s land-grant heritage and vision aligned with CSU’s Strategic Roadmap, OEE encompasses CSU Extension, CSU Learning Innovation Team (including CSU Online, CSU Professional Education, CSU Extension Programs, and OLLI ), the Colorado Water Center, and other high-impact programs.     The CSU Learning Innovation Team, housed within OEE , leads the design and activation of educational solutions that are agile, accessible, and aligned to the needs of modern learners. This team fosters cross-campus and cross-sector collaboration to co-create offerings that are responsive, scalable, and learner-centered—inspiring individuals to thrive across a lifetime of learning.

    Position Summary

    The manager for Instructional Design Services is responsible for the creation of the courses and learning assets that make up OEE’s overall portfolio of offerings. This position works closely with partners (including internal to OEE , across colleges and departments at CSU , and external to the university) to develop a portfolio of course offerings and educational assets that fit the organization and partners’ objectives. This position provides strategic oversight and portfolio management of educational solutions, with direct responsibility for cultivating and maintaining high-impact relationships with academic departments, institutional partners, and key stakeholders across and beyond OEE and CSU . This position plays a critical role in shaping the success or failure of assigned areas of accountability by enabling more direct and responsive collaboration with online programs, departments, and external stakeholders. This position contributes to the development of the annual budget and is responsible for managing and optimizing budget components tied to this portfolio. This position supervises the team of instructional designers and multimedia specialists who execute on the creation and iterative improvement of content and curriculum.

    Required Job Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree.

    + Minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in strategic program, unit, or initiative management.

    + Demonstrated ability to:

    + Direct a team or unit with cross-campus or statewide impact.

    + Develop and implement strategic plans aligned with institutional vision.

    + Manage budgets, staff, and systems with accountability and transparency.

    + Advise executive leadership on policy, investment, or innovation strategy.

    + Translate complex priorities into effective operations and measurable outcomes.

    + Build partnerships and influence culture across units, sectors, or statewide networks.

    + The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the Learning Innovation Team will not sponsor a visa for this position.

    + Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

    Preferred Job Qualifications

    + Advanced degree in education, instructional design, innovation, business, or related field.

    + Experience working in higher education or with lifelong learning ecosystems.

    + Familiarity with the Learning Innovation portfolios of CSU Online, CSU Professional Education, CSU Extension Programs, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute ( OLLI ).

    + Demonstrated ability to build and sustain partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.

    + Experience applying design thinking, human-centered design, or innovation frameworks.

    + Provide direction, support, and mentorship for half of the Instructional Design Services team (approximately 10 full-time staff per position).

    + Ensure that there is coordination and standardization of work on the team that aligns with OEE and partner goals of high-quality learning experiences.

    + Adjust team structure over time as organizational and partners’ needs evolve.

    + Recommend operational plans that strengthen and broaden the scope of the entire organization, focused on but not limited to the Instructional Design Services team.

    + Work with Director or Senior Director to create and manage annual budget that ensures priorities are appropriately funded.

    + Create a pipeline of innovation feedback with the Development & Analytics Team to ensure that best practices are being incorporated in course and curriculum design.

    + Develop and execute on a comprehensive innovation roadmap aligned with CSU’s strategic goals.

    + Build and lead innovation frameworks and processes that guide collaborative work across teams.
