The Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) in the Department of Medicine has an exciting opportunity for full-time (100% FTE) Research Scientist/Engineer - Senior.

The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the School of Medicine with over 4500 staff, faculty, trainees and students and an annual budget of approximately $500,000,000 consisting of patient care revenue, sponsored research funds, endowments and gifts, state funds and affiliated hospital funding associated with the academic programs within the department. The department is made up of thirteen subspecialty divisions: Allergy and Infectious Diseases; Cardiology; Dermatology; Gastroenterology; General Internal Medicine; Gerontology & Geriatric Medicine; Hematology; Medical Genetics; Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition; Nephrology; Oncology; Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine; and Rheumatology. These divisions occupy space at multiple sites including University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC), Harborview Medical Center (HMC), Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS), Puget Sound Blood Center (PSBC), Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC), Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), and other locations in the Seattle area.

The Division has a workforce of over 600, with 100 staff and 500 faculty, and is known for outstanding research, teaching and patient care.

Our clinical work spans 9 outpatient clinics at HMC and UWMC, across neighborhood clinics located throughout Puget Sound, and inpatient care at 4 hospitals in Seattle. GIM is the largest division in the Department of Medicine and includes both clinical and research functions with a total annual budget of over $110m. Faculty and staff are spread over 10+ sites around Seattle and the Puget Sound as well as in Boise, Idaho.

Field of Research:

The purpose of this position is to support multiple NIH-funded projects including, but not limited to, two major, multi-institute projects that are multi-site, interdisciplinary, and large in scale.

Purpose of the Research Project(s):

Three of the main responsibilities of this position will be to (1) serve as project director of HIV SUCCESS (2) take a leading role in leading and developing research in REI and (3) mentor and manage other research scientists and analysts on the team. This position works closely with leadership, faculty, and research staff, both within the Division and across other Divisions (e.g., AID) in the Department of Medicine, in an effort to support and build upon ongoing grant-funded research. The position allows for the development of new scientific areas of research and funding opportunities in the context of furthering the research agenda of the existing research group, as well as the Division.

The Research Scientist/Engineer - Senior role is based at Harborview Medical Center. The Research Scientist/Engineer - Senior is expected to use independent judgment, have strong leadership skills, and knowledge of epidemiological methods, data management, and HIV and/or CVD research to effectively facilitate cross-institution research and promote a collaborative, productive work environment. This position will maintain dynamic communication with the Primary Investigator (PI) team of the grants funding the position, faculty and staff across multiple divisions, as well as internal and external partners. This position participates in development of scientific agendas and grant planning.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project Direction (50%):

• Project coordination of multi-site projects of national scope; leads team of multi-site interdisciplinary scientists, data managers, and research coordinators toward project implementation, planning, and manuscript development.

• Development of research protocols with foresight into implications for future data analyses

• Supervises interdisciplinary team of research scientists and data managers

• Coordinate steering committee and working group committees for a consortium of PIs across the United States

• Detail-oriented reporting to senior PIs about the status of project goals, accomplishments, and workflow. Proactive identification of potential challenges and identification of routes to successfully overcome them

Epidemiological Research and Analysis (40%)

• Perform data audits and data cleaning for complex data. Actively participates in data harmonization between a consortium of cohort studies and outside data partners

• Statistical analysis of highly complex, longitudinal quantitative data from multiple sources

• Prepares, drafts, and edits scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals

• Presents papers at national and international conferences

• Application and adaptation of statistical methods to suit complex data harmonization projects

• Provide support for developing research questions for R01HL126538

• Mentor student/junior staff in statistical methods/analysis

Research Support (10%):

• Identification and pursuit of grant extension, supplements, and novel grant opportunities for research in the HIV, substance use, or cardiovascular disease fields

• Contributes to development of research objectives/aims

• Statistical analysis of highly complex quantitative data from multiple sources.

• Presents papers at national and international conferences

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• PhD in Epidemiology or a related field plus 6 years or more of related research experience.

_Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration._

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Experience with observational cohort study research in either HIV or CVD, with evidence of both complex analysis and successful publication of results as a lead author

• Able to do statistical programming in R and STATA, with experience in both analysis and data management

• Shows attention to detail in the execution of complex tasks

• Strong communication skills and the ability to work with a wide range of partners

• High-level pf precision and accuracy in data handling, analytics, manuscript writing, and coordination of research activities

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Familiarity with complex cohort studies such as the CFAR Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS) or the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS)

• Experience taking a leading role in executing of one or more NIH grants leading as well as leading working groups, steering committees, or similar administrative entities

$104,172.00 annual
