What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a motivated R&D S&E, Systems Engineer to serve as our Build and Tooling Engineer on the W93/Mk7. If you are passionate about contributing to the first ND Phase-X System in several decades and enjoy collaborating with experts across Sandia National Labs and the Nuclear Security Enterprise, we invite you to join our team!
You will work in a best-in-class facility, engaging in rewarding projects with outstanding teams, and utilizing top-tier support equipment and tools. As part of our team, you will play a crucial role in the early stages of our build and assembly process, developing critical processes with a strategic view of an entire program.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
+ Serve as the Systems liaison on complex W93/Mk7 assembly/disassembly operations for System level test assets.
+ Employ analytical thinking to work through ambiguous problems with a multi-disciplinary team when issues arise on a build.
+ Leverage your mechanical, process, test, and manufacturing engineering skills to identify practical solutions to difficult hardware and assembly/disassembly issues.
+ Serve as the key point of contact for the Weapon Modernization Lab, ensuring critical builds meet our program¿s test schedule and facilitating communication for critical operations between groups within Center 2300.
+ Collaborate with component, system design, qualification, and test engineers to ensure test assets meet required product definition parameters for both normal and abnormal test activities
+ Work closely with the hardware and assembly teams to ensure readiness and quality of all lab operations.
+ Develop and escalate nonconformance/problem reports to inform critical design decisions and component maturation.
+ Own the master build procedure for the W93/Mk7 program and partner with Test Leads to modify individual build procedures for specific test objectives, which may involve custom instrumentation.
+ Develop and procure build tooling and interfacing with Pantex and Lockheed Martin to ensure tooling concepts are effectively leveraged across the program.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$99,400 - $193,600
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
+ A bachelor¿s degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
+ Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent to start, with the ability to obtain and maintain a SIGMA15, which may require a polygraph
Qualifications We Desire:
The ideal R&D Systems Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
+ Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
+ Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
+ Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
+ Experience in nuclear weapons (systems or components) in areas such as: engineering design, testing, qualification, production, or quality assurance
+ Experience developing, writing, and maintaining nuclear weapons assembly procedures and other technical work documents.
+ Experience in application of the scientific method; gathering, analyzing, and presenting technical data for decision making and problem-solving purposes.
+ Demonstrated ability to lead and team effectively with technologists, engineers, and scientists as required.
+ Experience working with classified information, hardware, and accountable/hazardous materials.
+ Experience developing tooling and build fixtures for complex products and the ability procure them via Manufacturing Liaison.
+ Demonstrated success in positions requiring concentration and attention to detail
+ Demonstrated success working independently and as well as part of a team
+ Experience using MS office suite, SharePoint, PDMLink, and PRIME.
About Our Team:
The W93 Flight and System Enabling Technology Department is responsible for Flight Test planning and integration, System test asset builds, and the entire suite of logistics including the Integrated Surety Architecture. We directly engage across much of the Nuclear Security Enterprise including SNL/CA, LANL, PX, NNSA, LM, Navy, and KCNSC.

Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
