Description:
SCOPE OF SERVICE/CUSTOMER:
Under the supervision of a pharmacist, the inpatient pharmacy technician trainee assists in the provision of pharmaceutical care to inpatients and outpatients ranging in age from premature newborns to geriatrics. The inpatient pharmacy technician trainee is involved in the provision of educational and employee services to patients, guests, hospital and medical staff of MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center.
Customers: Pharmacy staff and management, medical and hospital staff and hospital guests.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Adheres to the principles of caring and expected behaviors outlined in MercyOne Medical Center's Model of Caring and Trinity Health's Code of Conduct, fostering a climate where all customers are treated in a manner consistent with MercyOne Medical Center's Mission and Values.
Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
Demonstrates specific customer focused behaviors.
Supports and abides by all MercyOne departmental and safety policies and procedures.
Acts in a professional manner reflecting the mission, philosophy, and values of MercyOne.
Works with and assists pharmacists and nurses with pharmacy related issues for patients and facilitates the implementation of provider orders.
Performs dispensing functions under the supervision of a pharmacist.
Prepares IV admixtures as well as any other sterile preparation encountered in pharmacy according to departmental policies.
Makes regular deliveries of medications to nursing units.
Processes unit based Pyxis refill reports and promptly delivers / resupplies medications to the nursing units.
Answers and processes incoming phone calls to the department.
Assists with department inventory procedures and processes.
Processes patient medication charges and credits accurately into pharmacy and / or hospital information system.
Demonstrates activity to impact change within your department and with other departments.
Promotes and establishes effective relationships within the department, with other departments, physicians, and with hospital guest and clients.
Takes an active role in enhancing abilities to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development.
Performs other duties as assigned by the supervising pharmacist, Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor and/or Director of Pharmacy.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Maintains a professional, collaborative work environment so as to foster a positive public image for MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center.
Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety and medical information (i.e. HIPAA, Stark, etc.).
Must be competent and accurate with performing math calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, divisions, percentages, fractions and the metric system.
Must demonstrate the ability to exercise professional judgment in dealing with pharmacy’s customers.
Must be competent and thorough in performing job functions to all age groups.
Must effectively utilize verbal and written communication skills.
Must be able to organize, prioritize, and function in an environment with multiple stress factors.
Must be competent with all hospital and pharmacy information system programs that pharmacy utilizes.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
In an 8-hour day, the employee may sit 2 hours, stand and/or walk 6 hours.
Mobility, dexterity, fine motor skills and ability to use hands in repetitive motion tasks, such as grasping and fine manipulating is required.
Frequent (21-50% of work time) bending, stooping, reaching above should level and pushing and pulling.
Frequent (21-50% of work time) lifting and carrying objects weighing 35 lbs or less.
Occasional (6-10% of work time) squatting, climbing two feet and balancing.
Must be able to see at a near visual acuity level.
Must be able to speak and hear speech.
Must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE** **REQUIRED:
Must be 17.5 years of age or older.
Typing, clerical and science background desirable.
Registration with Iowa Board of prior to starting employment.
Pass the test for and maintain national Pharmacy Technician certification as outlined by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy within 1 year of employment. If unable to pass the test within 1 year of employment, the employee will need to be terminated from the pharmacy technician trainee position.
Note: A minimum of three months of “on the job” training is required to perform the job; 12-24 months is usually required to become proficient.
