Description

The Director of Energy Construction, reporting directly to the Southeast Regional Construction Manager, is responsible for the managerial leadership and direction of Construction safety, strategic business initiatives, client strategy, team development, and project execution for the Southeast region. This role will have a primary focus on the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) and Electric Power Generation markets, with a particular emphasis on leading and growing our Design-Build / EPC and Construction-only portfolio.

The Director will lead the department in a safe, dynamic, and profitable manner based on Burns & McDonnell's core values of safety, client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, and overall outstanding service.

Job Duties:

Strategic Leadership & Business Development:

+ Manage the development and execution of strategic business initiatives to achieve growth and profitability objectives in the region.

+ Provide direction and oversight of business development efforts, including the identification and vetting of prospective clients and projects that align with business goals.

+ Lead and develop high-level capture strategies for Design-Build/EPC, and Construction-only opportunities.

+ Provide industry expertise and insight with respect to market pricing, competitive landscape, and sales approach strategies.

+ Engage in strategies for cross-selling construction services across the entire organization.

+ Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key clients, accounts, and strategic partners.

Project Execution & Pre-Construction Oversight:

+ Provide ultimate vision and leadership for all phases of project execution, including estimating/pre-construction, project management, project controls, procurement, safety, quality, and field operations.

+ Lead the identification of project risks and direct the development of appropriate risk mitigation strategies for complex Design-Build / EPC and Construction-only projects.

+ Direct pre-construction and estimating teams to ensure best practices in constructability planning, accurate quantity takeoffs, and the capture of project financial data to standardize for future estimates.

+ Lead critical, high-stakes contract negotiations for both upstream (client) and downstream (subcontractor) agreements.

Department & Team Management:

+ Lead a safety-first culture across the department and all related projects, proactively driving corporate and industry safety & health programs.

+ Provide leadership to the Construction team; direct and coordinate the Department, driving efficient and effective utilization of staff in coordination with both regional and national resources.

+ Recruit, hire, develop, and retain a team of outstanding construction professionals.

+ Manage the department's administrative and marketing budgets and related expenditures.

+ Achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance, presenting monthly financial information to senior leadership.

+ Conduct performance evaluations and provide mentorship to direct reports and key team members.

Operational Excellence:

+ Collaborate with T&D and Power Engineering leadership to drive and develop best practices and tools for project delivery across various contract types and scopes of work.

+ Develop and lead effective execution strategies utilizing direct-hire, subcontractor, and/or joint-venture partner resources.

+ Lead a strong quality process and program that adheres to the Burns & McDonnell Quality program.

+ Develop and implement strategies to grow subcontractor relationships and self-perform capacity within the region.

+ Oversee the utilization of construction-based software, tools, and processes to increase efficiency in project execution.

+ All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

+ Bachelor Degree in construction, engineering, business or related degree from an accredited program. and 13 years relevant consulting experience, preferably in the construction industry and/or project management required.

+ Expert experience in client and business development.

+ Expert experience in managing projects, which includes proposal development, contract negotiations, project planning, design team coordination & communication, budgeting, schedule management, and client coordination.

+ Expert facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem solving skills.

+ Demonstrated success as to budget, savings and/or profit margins in completed projects.

+ Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead and manage.

+ Excellent planning and analytical skills.

+ Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

+ Expert knowledge of project management methodologies and tools including the use of Microsoft Project or equivalent.

+ Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.
