Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Art & Art History is seeking an innovative researcher and experienced teacher to contribute in a leading role to a new online Graphic Design program, which will be delivered alongside our BFA in Graphic Design program. The successful candidate will teach 5 courses a year and contribute to the ongoing development and delivery of curriculum in the new online Graphic Design degree program.
The existing BFA program was launched in 2021 and has grown rapidly. The curriculum includes courses in design foundations, digital and print design, typography, web and UX/UI design strategies, design research and design thinking, as well as senior professional preparation and capstone projects courses. The Department is interested in candidates who have a record of success in advising/mentoring individuals from groups of all backgrounds in higher education. Please address this in your materials.
Research areas of expertise might include human-centered design; social-, civic-, or community- engaged design; digital media; motion graphics; web development; UX/UI design, and/or the creative and ethical applications of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) in design practice and pedagogy.
Starts August 10, 2026. Salary and start up package commensurate with qualifications. Nine-month contract includes 5 courses per year with potential for summer teaching for additional compensation. Hiring is subject to budget availability.
Minimum Experience / Education:
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
Preferred Education Skills and Experience:
Minimum Required Education/Experience Requirements:
+ Master’s degree in Graphic Design, or a terminal degree in a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education.
+ Demonstrated ability to use technology and digital media to support teaching
Preferred Qualifications:
+ A terminal degree (M.Des. or M.F.A.) in Graphic Design or closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education
+ 1-3 years of successful experience teaching at the postsecondary level in the graphic design or arts field
+ 1-3 years of successful experience teaching at the postsecondary level in online or hybrid formats
+ Demonstrated experience in course or curriculum development
Candidates should demonstrate a record of achievement in research. In order to maintain a trajectory towards tenure, a program of creative research must be disseminated through peer-reviewed venues of significance that are consistent with departmental mission and expectations. This can include commissioned and applied work (per AIGA Design Educators’ guidelines), exhibition of creative work, and/or scholarly publications and presentations.
