Job Title: Safety & Security Officer Department: Security Location: Rochester General Hospital Hours Per Week: 40hrs Schedule: Evenings (2:30pm - 11pm)
SUMMARY
The primary responsibility of the Protective Security Officer is to maintain peace and good order while secondarily serving as a first responder to emergency situations involving the threat or brandishing of weapons and/or active violence that may occur at Rochester General Hospital. Principally operating from a fixed post, the Officer will make periodic tours to secure areas, provide customer service, mitigate sudden behavioral occurrences, deter crimes, and check for irregularities. May enforce as required by circumstances, proprietary regulations pertaining to personnel, visitors, and premises. Minimally assist with the functions of existing safety and security personnel while primarily providing over watch to promote the protection of staff and property from theft or damage, or persons from hazards or interference, including the potential for violence in the workplace.
ATTRIBUTES
+ Associate's degree in criminal justice field or an equivalent combination of three (3) years' experience in the public safety field; hospital security field; military police field, correction officer field and/or law enforcement.
+ Prior Law Enforcement experience.
+ Bilingual skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Maintain a highly visible command presence and act as a visual deterrent to active aggression.
+ Maintain constant vigilance and situational awareness with the ability to rapidly respond to a weapons threat or active shooter situation in the Emergency Department or immediate proximity.
+ Properly handles routine and emergency incidents detrimental to the security and safety of the facility, patients, staff and employees.
+ Monitors access to Rochester Regional Health facilities through the admittance process; assists visitors with a legitimate need to gain entry to the facility; observes screening of patients, visitors and client employees to ensure they are conducted in a proficient manner in order to expedite their admittance to the facility, as needed and when prescribed.
+ Provides an atmosphere in which all Rochester Regional Health employees and visitors know that RRH responds to and cares about their needs; provides a courteous, respectful and pleasant interaction with each employee and visitor as perceived from their point of view; presents a good image of RRH and its security and safety department. Maintains and displays good public relations skills when interacting with patients, visitors, and staff.
+ Communicates in a manner that is open, honest and responsive in all situations; to the extent authorized, provides information regarding the facility and surrounding area as requested by visitors.
+ Monitors entrances and exits; prevents unapproved or unlawful entry; controls entrances, the movement of people and in a calm manner directs persons who cause a disturbance to leave the property.
+ Patrols assigned post on foot; checks for unsafe conditions, hazards, unlocked doors, security violations, blocked ingress and egress, mechanical problems, and unauthorized persons; inspects buildings and grounds using appropriate equipment and protective gear.
+ Protects evidence or scene of incident in the event of accidents, emergencies, or security investigations; sets up barriers and signage and provides direction or information to others.
+ Prepares logs or reports as required for post; writes or types reports or enters information in a computer using standard grammar; inspects security control logs and takes action as required.
+ Observes and reports incidents or suspicious activity to Safety and Security personnel, company management, life/safety personnel or public safety / law enforcement authorities as appropriate for the circumstances and/or as required by the post.
+ Responds to incidents of violence or similar conditions following procedures established for post, by Rochester Regional Health, or through training or certification.
+ Recognizes and promptly requests additional assistance as needed utilizing radio, phone or personnel operating in proximity to an event or incident.
+ Age-Related Competency: Has demonstrated knowledge of and competence in age-related patient care, as defined and documented in the facility standards.
+ Workplace Safety: Is aware of and works within healthcare facility and departmental safety guidelines, including reporting potential hazards and hazardous behavior. Uses appropriate body mechanics and lifting devices, as needed, for all work assignments.
+ Meets annual employee health screening requirements.
+ Carries out specific tasks and duties of a similar nature and scope as required for the assigned post.
+ Must maintain the highest standards of personal grooming and appearance. Strictly adhering to company uniform standards.
+ Meet and maintain the strict requirements of Rochester Regional Health for the safe and purposeful operation of the individual’s assigned firearm.
+ Perform other duties as assigned by Security Department Supervision.
Firearm Requirements:
+ Must demonstrate prior to employment and at any time during employment, that all requirements of New York State penal law section 400.00 to carry, possess, repair and dispose of firearms are current.
+ Must successfully complete all New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) training including:
+ The 47-Hour Firearms Training Course for Security Guards prior to applying for a Special Armed Guard Registration Card
+ The 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course prior to applying to the Department of State for a Security Guard Registration Card
+ The 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course for Security Guards within 90 days of initial employment as a security guard
+ The annual 8-Hour Annual In-service Training Course for Armed Security Guards.
+ Must periodically certify/qualify on the proper operation of their assigned firearm at the direction and supervision of the Senior Director of Safety and Security or the delegate.
+ Must keep their assigned firearm clean at all times and may not allow anyone else to perform any repair of their firearm unless approved by the Senior Director of Safety and Security or their delegate.
+ Must report any incident requiring that their firearm be removed from their holster with the exception of retrieving, cleaning or placing their firearm in secure storage at Rochester Regional Health facilities.
Other Duties:
+ Assist management in developing ideas and procedures to promote staff and patient safety.
+ Participate in critical incident planning and response procedures with both Security, Administrative and Medical personnel.
Required Licensure / Certification Skills:
+ Valid NYS Driver’s license
+ Valid NYS Pistol permit
+ Valid NYS Security Guard Armed license or is an active police officer (police officer status will be verified at the time of hire and annually).
+ CPR and first aid training certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment.

M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for a successful full time applicant. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components. Pay is determined by factors including experience, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
