We seek applicants who are dedicated to servingThe University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’sstudent body as an Assistant Professorin the School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences( SEEMS )beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year, to join our growing Ocean and Coastal Sciences research program. The successful candidate will contribute to both the Marine Biology B.S. program and the Ocean, Coastal, and Earth Sciences M.S. program.
We seek candidates with a research and teaching focus in Marine Sciences who can contribute to the undergraduate and graduate programs by teaching courses such as marine ecology, marine botany, fisheries ecology/biology/physiology and in the candidate’s areas of expertise. Preferred areas of expertise include: ocean productivity (e.g., plankton ecology, HABs, wind-tidal flats, seagrasses, coastal marshes, blue carbon), fish ecology and fisheries, and marine ecosystem services valuation. We also welcome applications from outstanding candidates whose expertise would complement and expand the School’s existing strengths.
We are especially interested in applicants whose research makes use of the region’s abundant and under-studied natural laboratories, such as the Laguna Madre, and who are eager to engage in interdisciplinary collaborations within SEEMS . UTRGV is a Hispanic-serving institution that emphasizes student success and seeks candidates with strong experience in teaching and a commitment to enhancing undergraduate education and diversity. Part of UTRGV’s expansion is the new ocean and coastal sciences research facility in Port Isabel, Texas, adjacent to South Padre Island ( SPI ), a popular tourist beach destination. The facilities at Port Isabel expand on the existing Coastal Studies Lab and public aquarium on SPI , an interdisciplinary coastal field station with active research, education and outreach programs. SEEMS has a fleet of inshore and offshore vessels and a scientific diving program.

Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. from an accredited university in Marine Sciences, or other related discipline. Successful candidates will demonstrate potential for forming interdisciplinary collaborations and the ability to involve both undergraduate and graduate students in research activities. Postdoctoral experience is an essential requirement for this position.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
