    Description of Work Unit

    As part of its Land-Grant Mission, Colorado State University is committed to making education accessible to those who, due to economic or social conditions, have not previously had full participation in post-secondary education. It is with a mission in mind that the Access Center was created.

    The Access Center strives to develop the talents of those who have been traditionally underrepresented in higher education: first-generation, low-income, and non-traditional-aged students by:

    + Nurturing college-going aspirations

    + Increasing academic skills and motivation

    + Reaching out to Colorado’s historically underserved secondary students

    + Facilitating the college application, enrollment, and student aid process

    + Assisting in the transition to college, supporting retention efforts\

     

    Upward Bound, a federally funded TRIO program, is designed to assist high school students from first-generation and low-income backgrounds to complete secondary school and enter post-secondary education programs. Program services include group and individual counseling, academic advising and support, exposure to career and educational opportunities, and personal enrichment events. The program serves 60 students in the Denver area of Abraham Lincoln High School, Bruce Randolph High School, and John F. Kennedy High School.

    Position Summary

    The Assistant Director for the Upward Bound program (Denver) in the Access Center is responsible for supervision, program planning and management, and academic program development. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Upward Bound Programs and provides administrative and leadership support in the implementation of the mission and goals of the Access Center.

     

    The Assistant Director will be a full-time Administrative-Professional university appointment. This position requires a varied work schedule that includes evening and weekends, and requires substantial travel. The Assistant Director must maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License or have access to a licensed driver. The university will conduct a criminal and motor vehicle background check on final candidates.

    Required Job Qualifications

    + Master’s degree in education, student personnel, higher education, counseling, or related field (conferred by date of hire)

    + Three years of experience working with youth in a TRIO or other related program, where interacting with secondary and post-secondary institutions and students was central to the role.

    + The successful candidate must maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License or have access to a licensed driver.

    Preferred Job Qualifications

    + Experience supervising staff (interns, tutors, counselors, volunteers)

    + Strong communication skills, including writing, speaking, and the use of computer applications.

    + Bilingual language ability (English/ Spanish)

    + Demonstrated experience in program development and event planning, including coordinating logistics, managing timelines, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders to deliver high-quality student or community-focused events.

    + Demonstrated commitment and experience working with first-generation, low-income students.

    + Assist with budget oversight and grant expenditures in line with federal, state, and institutional guidelines.

    + Provide leadership in developing counseling plans, academic curriculum, student events and trips, and summer pre-collegiate programs.

    + Maintain student caseload of UB program participants.

    + Develop and coordinate the implementation of a recruitment plan for 60 participants.

    + Monitor the progress toward accomplishment of program objectives and oversee documentation of all aspects of project activity.\

    + Assist in compiling data and write reports documenting program outcomes and accomplishments for U.S. Department of Education, the University, and the community

    + Provide counseling, assessment, information, workshops, and enrichment events for students, and carry out the responsibilities of a project counselor in relation to these participants when necessary.

    + Develop and maintain relationships between the program and the community, including schools, post-secondary institutions, and other public and private community organizations and institutions.

    + Provide leadership in planning for training and professional development activities for the organization, and participate fully in such activities

    + Develop and maintain a network of educational and career resources for the benefit of the program and participants.

    + Attend state, regional, and national TRIO conferences for the betterment of the UB program
