    Job Purpose

     

    The Risk Management Specialist within Enterprise Risk Management & Insurance Programs (ERM) will provide technical knowledge and subject matter expertise encompassing all aspects of the University’s workers compensation program. Key components of this position will be to identify exposures facing the University’s workforce through proper administration and oversight of the self-insurance workers’ compensation program and assist the Associate Director of ERM in the administration of the Certificate of Insurance Program and the completion of casualty and property applications including those not included in the Michigan Universities Self-Insurance Corporation (M.U.S.I.C.) core contracts. This position reports to Senior Director of Enterprise Risk Management & Insurance Programs.

    Essential Functions

    Administer, organize, and manage all Phases of Worker’s Compensation Claims (from initial filing to claim closure). This entails the authorization of payments for medical treatment invoices and the investigation of injuries including student injuries.

     

    Administer, organize, and manage the workers compensation data base that tracks all employee and student injuries along with their respective medical invoices; medical payments; indemnity payments; and Medicare payments. Provide oversight to ERM personnel involved with data base entry recordkeeping.

     

    Provide oversight of the excess workers compensation insurance program. Generate financial reports for the excess insurance carriers as well as participate in the performance of cost/benefit analysis when determining to seek request for proposals from other insurance companies.

     

    Aid the Associate Director in the organization and implementation of the MI Universities Self-Insurance Corporation (M.U.S.I.C.) Casualty and Employer Legal Liability Insurance Programs.

     

    Processing and completing insurance applications in collaboration with university departments, and the organization and implementation of M.U.S.I.C. Certificate of Insurance program for entities doing business with the University.

     

    Administer, organize, and manage the MI Occupational Safety and Health Administration Record Keeping and Reporting Rules for employee injuries. Collaborate with WSU Office of General Counsel and any outside law firms involved in litigated claims.

     

    Investigate and adjust Level I self-insured property claims.

     

    Perform account transfers to departments when claims are paid.

     

    Aid in the recording of claims paid and claims denied in the department database.

     

    Perform other related duties as assigned.

    WORK CONTEXT

    Job Reports to: Senior Director.

     

    Leadership Accountability: Implements operating plans.

     

    Financial Accountability: Monitors expenditures.

     

    Customer Accountability: Interfaces with customers outside the S/C/D.

     

    Freedom to Act: Subject to regular review by supervisor.

    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education

    Bachelor's degree.

     

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Risk Management, Business Administration, or a related field.

    Experience

    Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience).

     

    Certification as a Certified Workers Compensation Professional.

     

    Proven experience in risk management, preferably in the higher education industry.

     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

     

    Extensive knowledge of the Worker’ Disability Compensation Act and Administrative Rules, State of MI.

     

    Extensive knowledge of MIOSHA Rules and Regulations as they pertain to employee injury recordkeeping and reporting.

     

    Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse proficient team.

     

    Interpret medical reports and records provided by hospitals and health care agencies.

     

    Interpret International Classification of Diseases as well as diagnoses.

     

    Multi-task and prioritize tasks, assignments, projects from department leadership.

     

    Must have good oral, written, instructional, analytical and computer skills.

     

    Proficient in the use of automated management systems including the university work comp software program and a risk management information system program.

     

    Proficient with Microsoft Office Tools, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
