Responsibilities:
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Responsible for generating and analyzing nursing performance measures and presenting outcomes to the executive staff. Identifies actionable insights and recommendations. Conducts specialized and highly complex analysis of financial data; including the design, implementation and dissemination of complex analytical reports; in support of various finance functions. Demonstrates strong critical thinking and analytical reasoning in creation of tools and reports that improve ability to manage department financial and operational activities. Demonstrates problem-solving capabilities by analyzing complex data, understanding relationships among sources of information, and making assessments with increasing independence as expertise develops. Proactively identifies financial trends, operational inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement. Assists with preparation of operating budgets and performs financial reporting and analysis across all activities for the Nursing department. Actively assist the Director of Nursing Practice Finance and Sr Financial Analyst in generating the overall annual Nursing operating budget presentation.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general direction of the Sr. Financial Analyst, conforming to URMC policies but retaining latitude for independent judgment and initiative:
Report Maintenance and Data Analysis:
+ Interpret and analyze monthly performance metric data and statistics including but not limited to:
+ Salary expenses such as Orientation, Overtime
+ Non-salary expenses such as Employee Recognition, Medical Supplies
+ Create, maintain, and troubleshoot complex monthly reports such as:
+ Cost per Patient Day, Nursing Scorecards, Patient Day Report, Variance Report
+ Prepare and distribute weekly reports such as:
+ Traveler FTE and Productive FTE forecasts
+ Manage NDNQI submission process for nursing indicators such as:
+ Nursing Care Hours and Patient Days
+ Ad hoc analysis and reporting as needed.
Strategic Analysis & Problem Resolution:
+ Learn to identify and investigate financial anomalies, variances, and operational inefficiencies
+ Develop creative solutions to complex financial and operational challenges with appropriate mentorship and support
+ Conduct root cause analysis for budget variances and recommend corrective actions
+ Build capability to troubleshoot issues and develop preventive measures with increasing independence
+ Ability to handle multiple projects at once, with differing levels of complexity and deadlines
Budget Planning & Fiscal Management:
+ Assist in preparing Nursing Practice and Respiratory Therapy Operating Budgets under general direction of Finance Director Nursing Practice and Sr. Financial Analyst.
+ Generate financial reports and expense projections to support budget processes.
+ Collaborate with Clinical Nursing Directors and Nurse Managers to assist in the preparation of business plans for new nursing units and incremental staffing requests for current units and departmental programs.
+ Analyze nursing variances for FTEs and salary costs monthly and work with nursing management on action plans.
+ Assist with the monthly attestation/reconciliation process for Nursing Practice and Respiratory Therapy accounts under the guidelines of Nursing Practice audit policy including reporting needs and error follow-up.
+ Track and analyze agency expense trends and budget variances; prepare monthly accruals.
+ Exercise independent judgment in evaluating budget requests and financial proposals.
+ Critically assess the financial viability of new programs and initiatives.
+ Create monthly FTE/Budget modification forms.
+ Create and submit monthly journal entries as needed.
Resource Support & Training:
+ Set up and teach financial workshops to nurse management on monthly fiscal responsibilities (such as variance analysis, transaction reconciliation)
+ Serve as a resource to nursing departments related to UR Financials tasks and processes
+ Assist with presentations to nursing leadership and/or executive groups as needed, such as:
+ Nursing Leadership Orientation, New Nurse Manager Development Program, Assistant Nurse Manager Development Residency
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Education & Experience:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Healthcare Analytics,
+ Or Business Administration and 2+ years of related experience, preferably in a healthcare setting
+ Or equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
+ Expertise in advanced Excel tools and/or database or dashboard management experience
+ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and keen attention to detail
+ Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, using sound judgment to multi-task, prioritize competing demands, and resolve complex issues
+ Excellent interpersonal and communication skills while maintaining a high level of professionalism; experience with presentations and staff training preferred
+ Experience with or willing to learn UR Financial software (Workday, UKG, Axiom)
