    Job Summary

    The Department of Emergency Medicine Research is searching for a highly motivated technician to manage a genetically diverse mouse colony at NCRC. The focus of the lab is on basic science and translational research focused on cardiac arrest/resuscitation and traumatic brain injury. Specific areas of current focus include mechanisms of neuronal injury and neuroprotective therapies. The candidate should have previous experience working with and be comfortable handling mice. The individual will play a primary role in the day-to-day operations associated with large colony maintenance, including breeding and genotyping, as well as general husbandry demands. Additional responsibilities will include performing sterile surgery and providing post-surgical care for mice. The applicant will work closely with several research faculty and other research staff in an established lab at NCRC.

    Responsibilities*

    Mouse colony management: The candidate will manage daily elements of animal colony including maintaining several strains of genetically modified animals, recording litter dates of birth, genotyping, weaning mice, and general husbandry. The individual should be familiar with mouse genetics including complex transgenic and knockout strains. Must be capable of supervising various strains and designing appropriate breeding schemes

     

    + Molecular biology techniques: Perform PCR, western blots, gel electrophoresis, and interpret genetic composition of colony

    + Assist with surgery and post-op care

    + Detail record keeping skills: The candidate should be familiar with MS Office programs (Word, Excel) for the daily updates of the animal database. The candidate should be able to think independently, maintain meticulous records, and have good troubleshooting skills

    + Other tasks as assigned by PI

    Required Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree in science

    + At least one year of rodent colony management, including experience genotyping.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree in biology, animal science, or related scientific degree and experience with mouse colony management.

    + Two or more years of previous experience with rodents and genetically modified strains, as well as experience with aseptic surgery.

    + The successful candidate will have excellent organizational and time management skills, good communication skills, the ability to work with minimal supervision, and a strong enthusiasm for developing new skills and expertise.

     

    Work Schedule

     

    Full time Monday thru Friday. Flexible schedule with occasional nights and weekends depending on study.

    Background Screening
