    Job Summary

The Professional Geologist is a specialized role focused on studying, analyzing, and interpreting the Earth’s materials and processes. This role combines fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and sophisticated data interpretation techniques to evaluate rock formations, mineral resources, and subsurface conditions. Professional Geologists play a crucial part in natural resource exploration, environmental assessments, risk management, and geotechnical investigations. This classification provides critical insights that guide decision-making for construction, environmental remediation, energy production, and land-use planning.

    Primary Responsibilities

Conduct geological surveys and field investigations to collect soil, rock, and mineral samples. Measure and document geological features (e.g., stratification, fault lines, formation structures) using advanced field instrumentation and techniques. Maintain detailed records and field notes to support data analysis and map creation. Perform laboratory tests, such as petrographic analysis, geochemical assays, and seismic data interpretation, to determine the composition, structure, and age of geological samples. Utilize modern analytical methods and software to interpret geological data and develop predictive models for subsurface exploration. Create and update geological maps, cross-sections, and 3D models using specialized software. Prepare detailed technical reports that summarize field and laboratory findings, including recommendations for exploration, environmental protection, or construction projects. Collaborate with engineers, environmental scientists, and land planners to integrate geological insights into multidisciplinary projects. Provide expert advice regarding risks associated with natural hazards, environmental impacts, and resource management strategies. Ensure all activities adhere to relevant local, state, and federal regulations and industry standards. Implement and monitor safety protocols during field surveys and laboratory operations. Maintain accurate databases and utilize geographic information system software, remote sensing, and modeling software to support geological analyses and decision-making processes.

    Knowledge and Skills

Demonstrated ability to analyze complex geological data and synthesize findings into actionable insights. Proficient in field surveying methods, laboratory analyses, and the use of specialized software (such as geographic information system software and remote sensing technology). Strong written and verbal communication skills to prepare detailed reports, maps, and presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences. High level of accuracy in data collection, analysis, and documentation to ensure reliability and precision in reporting. Ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams, offering expert geological insights and integrating with broader project goals.

    Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.

Minimum of 4 years of practical experience in geological investigations, including significant field and laboratory work.

Professional licensure as a Professional Geologist may be required depending on the region.

Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.

    Licensure/Certifications

N/A OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
