Job Summary

Acoustic Engineer II provides technical solutions to a variety of routine to moderately difficult problems in underwater acoustics. Capable of contributing to clearly defined technical approaches and solutions to typical engineering challenges. Uses established procedures and creativity to resolve standard issues under general supervision.

Responsibilities and Tasks

+ Assist in the design of underwater hydrophones, projectors and/or active and passive transducers utilizing cylindrical ceramics, spherical ceramics, and flexural disks.

+ Model, simulate, and test acoustic transducers in Acoustic Test Tank.

+ Electrical impedance testing of piezo ceramics.

+ Assist engineering with design modification of acoustic subsystems and systems for development.

+ Support designs with analysis, simulations, and calculations using MATLAB, and FEA under guidance.

+ Prepare documentation for work as required for engineering and manufacturing of products.

+ Conduct in-house tests under general supervision.

+ Apply basic risk and failure analysis principles as required within the engineering discipline.

+ Resolve basic product process and system issues; provide recommendations for enhancements and cost reductions.

+ Keep accurate and complete documentation of engineering work.

+ Evaluate materials and systems, identify equipment, or prepare work instructions for manufacturing.

+ Provide support to bid and proposal activities.

+ Provide communications and/or presentations to immediate team members and suppliers.

Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications

+ Bachelors or master's in engineering, math, or physics, preferred in acoustics/sonar/ultrasonic related field.

+ A minimum of two (2) to five (5) years related experience.

Skills and Abilities

+ U.S. Citizenship is required.

+ The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance

+ Knowledge/skills must include strong education, theoretical background, and experience with applied hands-on implementation expertise in electronic design, simulation, modeling, analysis, and test.

+ Knowledge of Underwater Acoustics, wave propagation, arrays, acoustic impedance, and beaming forming.

+ Basic finite element modeling/analysis experience with COMSOL preferred.

+ Experience with simulation and computational programs (e.g. MATLAB).

+ Must be familiar with piezoelectric materials and associated applications.

+ Experience with transducer potting materials such as epoxies and urethanes.

+ Hands-on experience with development, building, and testing of acoustic transducer assemblies and systems.

+ Pluses include environmental testing such as shock and vibration, and thermal shock.

+ Pluses include experience with analog and digital interfacing, amplifiers, microcontrollers, digital signal processing and knowledge of, time and frequency domain filtering, sampling theorem and aliasing and communication protocols.

+ Ability to draw solutions from both formal training and experience.

+ Experience in generating design documentation and technical reports.

+ Experience with programing languages such as Python preferred.

+ Knowledge of general Artificial Intelligence (AI) preferred.

Travel and Physical Requirements

+ 10% travel required.

+ While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, talk, and communicate, use hands/finger, feel, and reach with arms. This position requires the ability to lift, bend or stoop as necessary up to 20lbs.
