    The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is seeking multiple Student Workers to support the Minnesota Immunization Information Connection (MIIC) Operations Unit and the Vaccine Preventable Disease (VPD) Surveillance Unit. These positions provide valuable support in public health while contributing to MDH’s mission of protecting, maintaining, and improving the health of all Minnesotans.

     

    **MIIC Operations Unit:** The Student Workers will support the MIIC Operations Unit, assisting with inquiries from the public about immunization records, performing data entry, and providing administrative support for MIIC operations.

    **VPD Surveillance Unit:** The Student Workers will primarily assist with surveillance activities for pertussis, varicella, and zoster. Students may also help with other diseases including, but not limited to, measles and mumps. This position will be responsible for case investigations, tasking and tracking of case investigations, supporting outbreak response activities, and ensuring high quality data entry and data management. This position may also support some data analysis efforts.

     

    These positions are part-time and will work 20 hours per week. The specific hours and days of work are flexible within 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, around the student's class schedule. Work may be conducted in-person in St. Paul, or as telework for applicants who reside in MN, IA, WI, ND, or SD based on the business needs of the unit and supervisor discretion. These temporary positions are expected to end by August 30, 2027, or until the selected candidate completes their educational program, whichever occurs sooner.

    Completion of two years of post-secondary education in one of the following areas: health, public health or a related field.

     

    Student Worker Eligibility: To be eligible for appointment as a Student Worker Paraprofessional Senior you must be enrolled in a post-secondary or graduate program or plan to enroll within three months. Students may be "off" for the summer or for one semester/quarter and remain employed as a student worker, but such absences cannot exceed one semester/quarter in a year. If you are enrolled at a credit-granting institution you must carry at least six semester/nine quarter credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution or one that only offers one credit per class, you must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load will be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an Educational Verification form prior to appointment.

    Preferred Qualifications

    For MIIC Operations Unit:

    + Demonstrated interest in disease prevention (e.g. public health, immunization, health care, maternal and child health, health promotion).

    + Ability to use computer databases in order to perform data entry and summary reports.

    + At least 3 months of experience using the Minnesota Immunization Information Connection (MIIC).

    + At least 3 months of using REDCap for data entry and operational support.

    For VPD Surveillance Unit:

    + Career goals in applied infectious disease epidemiology.

    + Ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relations with co-workers, supervisors, and health care professionals, and to work collaboratively as part of a team.

    + Experience with and able to understand medical terminology.

    + Experience reviewing and interpreting medical charts.

    + Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with members of the public and health care professionals.

    Physical Requirements

    + Ability to lift at least 25 pounds.
