Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This position is committed to engaging students in personal development and self-assessment, teaching students how to effectively manage their academic success and supporting students through exploration of their major and career development plans. Students are expected to develop plans consistent with their interests, abilities, and aspirations and to utilize available resources to achieve their long-term goals. This individual ensures that students have access to accurate and relevant information so that they can take initiative and responsibility for their success. This individual upholds the expectations and standards of advising at Charlotte in a professional and respectful manner that reflects an appreciation for students from all backgrounds.
+ Learn and remain current on all relevant curriculum for the discipline and, more broadly, the students’ degree program.
+ Assist students in developing plans for making progress towards these goals while attending UNC Charlotte and evaluating and charting their own progress toward those goals.
+ Understand and effectively develop students’ knowledge of university academic policies, regulations, guidelines, and deadlines, and the curriculum requirements for the specific program(s) of study of the students being advised.
+ Use advising technologies effectively to give accurate, timely information.
+ Proactively engage students to ensure degree program persistence and timely graduation.
Specific functional areas include:
+ Liaison between the department, other college/university advisors, and students
+ Orientation and outreach
+ Targeted advising
+ Work closely with the Chair/Undergraduate Coordinator/Program Director to ensure that the advising students are getting is serving the needs of the department or program, as well as make the department aware of student issues as they arise
+ Coordinates with the Associate Director on cross-training other advisors for their respective departments
+ Other duties, as assigned.
Minimum Experience / Education:
+ Master’s degree in a related field, and two years of related experience.
Preferred Education Skills and Experience:
+ A master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or Student Affairs is preferred.
+ Previous experience with onboarding new students as a part of New Student Orientation is desired, including the ability to demonstrate established rapport with individuals, inspire confidence, and build relationships.
+ A working knowledge of Banner, Slate, EAB , and DegreeWorks is a plus.
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills that demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and the maintenance of confidentiality.
+ Experience in presenting to groups of people utilizing relevant technology and pedagogical best practices.
