The *Cytogenetics Laboratory* at MD Anderson plays a critical role in advancing precision cancer diagnostics through high-complexity chromosome, FISH, and molecular cytogenetic testing. Our team supports clinicians and researchers by providing detailed cellular and genetic insights that directly influence patient care decisions and drive breakthroughs in cancer science. We work with some of the most challenging and unique specimen types, using cutting-edge platforms to uncover chromosomal abnormalities that guide treatment strategies for patients battling cancer.
As a *Senior Cytogenetic Scientist*, you bring advanced analytical expertise to complex and high-risk casework. You will perform and interpret sophisticated karyotyping and FISH analysis, troubleshoot difficult specimens, validate new methodologies, and mentor fellow technologists to elevate laboratory performance. Your leadership in quality, regulatory compliance, instrumentation, and process optimization ensures accurate, timely results that directly impact patient outcomes and support institutional innovation.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Advanced Technical Skills
- Performs cytogenetic and FISH analysis of all types of specimens, especially complex or difficult cases with accurate karyograms, advanced ISCN nomenclature and correct interpretation templates.
- Assists with technical troubleshooting of difficult specimens and cases.
- Maintains competency in computer functions, policies and procedures.
- Maintains competency and performs tissue culture, harvest, banding, chromosome analysis, FISH procedures and solid tumor processes as applicable.
Productivity, Communication and Supervision
- Maintains optimum productivity in routine and FISH analysis.
- Trains other employees.
- Communicates situations, problems and suggestions for resolution to the lead.
- Models team qualities to encourage a positive team environment.
- Participates in process improvements that positively impact productivity and laboratory function.
Quality Commitment and Enhancement
- Adheres to regulatory guidelines during all daily work processes.
- Participates in validations of new methodologies, tests and instrumentation. Leads special project when necessary.
- Performs lot testing, QC testing, aeroscout alerts, reagent preparation and inventory control.
- Models ideal compliance with quality control, quality improvement, safety and quality assurance.
- Troubleshoots and maintains laboratory equipment.

EDUCATION
Required: Bachelor's Degree Cytogenetic Technology or related science field.
Preferred: Master's Degree Related science field or Doctorate Related science field.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required: 4 years Clinical laboratory experience or 2 years Required experience with Master's degree or no experience with Doctorate degree.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Preferred: CG(ASCP) - Technologist in Cytogenetics Technologist in Cytogenetics (CG) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Certification (BOC)
