    Pikes Peak State College is located at the foot of Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado. PPSC offers broad programs in transfer, occupational, and preparatory subjects emphasizing student and community needs. Colorado Springs is a great city to both work and live. This position is located at the Pikes Peak State Centennial Campus.

    Description of Job

    This position performs a wide range of grounds maintenance duties to ensure a safe, clean, and attractive campus environment. Responsibilities include landscaping, grounds care, irrigation maintenance, snow removal, minor equipment repair, and assisting other Facilities Work Units with service requests throughout the college system. This position also performs lead duties for the grounds crew and completes other tasks as assigned.

     

    Duties and Responsibilities

     

    Grounds Maintenance

     

    + Performs general grounds cleanup and landscaping tasks, including mowing, trimming, weeding, fertilizing, and applying herbicides and pesticides.

    + Conducts walkway, road, and parking lot repairs.

    + Performs snow and ice removal using hand tools, vehicles, and equipment.

    + Ensures all work complies with applicable safety standards, environmental requirements, and chemical-use regulations.

    Irrigation Systems

    + Installs, inspects, designs, maintains, and repairs commercial irrigation systems to ensure proper operation and water efficiency.

    + Programs and adjusts irrigation controllers based on weather, soil conditions, and plant needs.

    + Locates and repairs leaks, broken lines, malfunctioning valves, and sprinkler heads.

    + Monitors system performance and recommends improvements to enhance water conservation and coverage.

    + Ensures compliance with all safety and water-use regulations.

    Equipment Operation and Maintenance

    + Operates, maintains, and performs minor repairs on a wide range of grounds equipment and motor pool vehicles.

    + Performs routine cleaning and basic maintenance on mowers, trimmers, and other equipment.

    + Reports equipment repair needs to supervisor and ensures tools and machinery are used safely and properly.

    + Maintains equipment and storage areas in a clean, organized, and stocked condition.

    Lead Work Responsibilities

    + Performs lead duties for the grounds department and provides daily coordination of the grounds crew (2 FTE).

    + Assigns work orders, coordinates daily tasks, and assists with snow-call matrix responsibilities.

    + Provides training, support, and guidance to staff.

    + Promotes and monitors safety procedures and work-site best practices.

    + Oversees the quantity and quality of work performed by assigned staff.

    Administrative and Communication Duties

    + Logs into the computer daily to record work hours, time, and leave information.

    + Maintains and organizes electronic files and records related to grounds operations.

    + Uses the SchoolDude work order system to communicate with customers, update work statuses, and provide timelines for scheduled tasks.

    + Assists other Facilities Work Units as needed to support a safe, clean, and comfortable learning environment for students and staff.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Experience Only:

    Two (2) years of progressively responsible grounds care and maintenance experience appropriate to the job assignment listed above. Must be a team player and able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and written. Must have the ability to multitask and be a self starter. Address in detail your experience as it relates to this position. Do not use "see resume" statements in application. Your application must be completed in detail, showing relevant experience in order to be considered. Part time experience will be prorated.

     

    Substitutions: None

     

    Necessary Special Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver's license to independently drive company vehicles and equipment around the campus, pick up parts, etc. Must submit to and successfully complete a pre-employment background check to include a motor vehicle report (MVR) as a condition of hire. Felony convictions or conviction of crimes of moral turpitude or convictions of misdemeanors related to job duties may disqualify you from consideration for this position. Should your background check reveal any charges and convictions, it is your responsibility to provide office of Human Resources with an official disposition of the charges. Position is required to be available as early as 4:00 a.m. to perform snow removal and other duties during adverse weather conditions. Position will be required to work additional hours as needed during times of unusual storm occurrences or storm damage. An essential function of this position requires exertion of up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects (i.e. lifting equipment, pushing grounds equipment, removing snow, etc.). It also requires constant or frequent climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling and reaching. Successful candidate must be able to follow verbal communication and be able to read and comprehend written directions on labels, machinery and in manuals, etc. Also, must be able to interpret written directives, policies, guidelines and memos.

     

    Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of irrigation systems. Previous experience operating a wide variety of landscaping equipment such as an edger, ATV, Skid steer, pruners, loppers, gator, string trimmer and hedge trimmer. Experience operating large deck mowers. Knowledge in maintaining baseball fields. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Team player. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and written. Ability to multitask and be a self-starter. Basic computer skills to create memos, complete timesheets and leave requests, etc.

    Appeal Rights:
