    Student Health Services Director

    POSITION DETAILS

    Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens **,** LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students.

     

    Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce.     Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, the Student Health Services Director contributes to the Division of Student Affairs by developing and maintaining partnerships and collaborations that enrich the campus experience and encourage healthy lifestyles.

     

    This position has a significant integrative function, co-developing programming with other departments and academic units to ensure that well-being is encouraged and supported throughout the campus experience. The Director also works with other educational and health-related stakeholders to develop, implement, and execute campaigns, programs, events, outreach, and workshops and supports the vision and mission of Health and Wellness Services. The Student Health Services Director will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

     

    + Oversees the planning and implementation of campus co-curricular health programming, including but not limited to: Student Awareness Outreach Programs, CUNY Wellness Festival, World AIDS Day, CPR Training, Blood Drives, Cover the Uninsured Day, Great American Smoke-out, Healthy Heart Awareness Wear Red Day, Special Events; serves as health educator and advocate for students, staff, and the community;

    + Direct communications from the Student Health Services office to students, the campus community, medical professionals, and community organizations/agencies;

    + Ensure compliance with City, State, and Federal laws and regulations as well as campus and university policies and protocols;

    + Determine if students have necessary medical examinations, certifications, and vaccinations as required by law for their program of study and any other school related activity;

    + Supervise Student Health Services staff that may include nursing, medical, contracted and support staff;

    + Provide initial emergency care and first aid and/or referral as appropriate. Respond to on-campus emergencies as per campus policy;

    + Coordinate with CUNY and the NYC Department of Health for immunization clinics on campus, as needed;

    + Document and maintain accurate, confidential student medical records and statistics;

    + Refer students to healthcare professionals and resources, as appropriate;

    + Act as a resource to the college community regarding general health questions;

    + Track and maintain an adequate inventory of medical, pharmaceutical, and office supplies. Stock supplies and verify expiration dates;

    + Follow infection control protocol in performing work and handling equipment and chemicals according to CUNY's guidelines and other legal regulations for personal and environmental safety; ensure proper disposal of work-related hazardous materials and waste;

    + Maintain current knowledge of general health practices and protocols, and collaborate with community-based organizations and health agencies;

    + Develop and manage the annual health services budget;

    + Oversee the entry of student health information into CUNYfirst system;

    + Review and analyze statistical data regarding campus health services. Report health related data required by CUNY and government agencies;

    + Serve as a campus consultant and expert for other departments on initiatives related to health promotion, health services, wellness, and other relevant areas as needed;

    + Participate with the college community in disaster and emergency preparedness activities;

    + Serve as a member of the CUNY Health Services Council; attend regular council meetings.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    -Master's degree and candidates with medical professional backgrounds preferred. Four to six years' experience with a demonstrated level of increased responsibility in higher education or a health-related field preferred.

     

    -A license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State. This license must be maintained as current for the duration of employment.

    CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

    Provides administrative oversight and general direction for multiple aspects of campus health and wellness support services.

     

    - Develops and monitors health-related programming, outreach activities and communications to support a diverse student population

     

    - Plans and conducts student service and needs assessments

     

    - Manages a comprehensive set of student services including counseling services, student disabilities services, and general student health services including immunization and wellness programs

     

    - Assists with strategic planning; oversees department fiscal affairs including budget; may participate in grant development and/or administration

     

    - Advises senior management on issues related to student wellness; collaborates with other campus and University offices to ensure student satisfaction; ensures compliance with laws, regulations, and policies

     

    - May supervise Counselors, Sign Language Interpreters, Disability Accommodations Specialists, and other support staff

     

    - Performs related duties as assigned.

    $122,201 -$131,440

     

    Salary commensurate with education and experience.
