Role Overview:

This position will serve as a Public Relations Intern for the Public Information Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The intern will be responsible for a variety of public relations projects and support functions. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in sharing construction, operations, project, and safety information with the traveling public. The intern will report to Sidney Nierman in INDOT’s Southeast District.

Hourly Rate:

The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

+ Assist with the preparation and distribution of written communications materials, including but not limited to news releases, talking points, graphics, and other materials as needed.

+ Assist with social media content creation (videos, info graphics, captions, etc.) and scheduling, as well as monitoring on Facebook and X.

+ Assist with gathering pictures and videos of INDOT projects within the district and statewide.

+ Attend district meetings as needed (pre-construction conferences, progress meetings, public meetings, etc.)

+ Complete a multimedia project (video, graphic series, etc.) relating to a district or statewide INDOT effort, project, resource, or operation.

+ Carry out the public information process for a specific INDOT Southeast construction project (written communications, project updates and pictures, attend progress meetings, work with construction project personnel, etc.) with supervision from the Public Relations Director.

+ Other duties as assigned by the Public Relations Director or other directors within the district

What You'll Need for Success:

+ Working towards a bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, mass communications or a related field

+ Relevant work experience preferred

+ Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT

+ Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations

+ Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process

+ Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports

+ Analytical skills

+ Ability to handle multiple projects

+ Ability to operate computer tools

+ Good research and writing skills

+ Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts

+ Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
