    Position Description

    Operating on the frontlines, Environmental Health Specialists perform regulatory inspections, providing guidance to operators of food service establishments and other public facilities in the prevention of foodborne and waterborne illnesses. Environmental Health Specialists also conduct training sessions to educate food service operators and workers on the risk factors that lead to foodborne illness outbreaks and work closely with epidemiological staff in the investigation of foodborne illness outbreaks.

    Typical Duties

    + Performs environmental public health inspections of industrial facilities, air monitoring equipment, food establishments including restaurants and bars, public facilities, sewage disposal systems, houses and other dwelling units, public schools, hotels, and swimming pools to secure compliance with laws and regulations governing sanitary conditions.

    + Interprets regulations and educates owners and operators of businesses and the general public in matters of environmental public health.

    + Conducts surveys to determine presence, number, and types of rodents or vectors in a given area.

    + Investigates violations and complaints and prepares related reports and correspondence.

    + Conducts environmental and public health consultation and training services for facility operators, local and state officials, organizations, and the general public.

    + Collects samples of food, water, sewage, and other materials for laboratory analyses.

    + Engages in epidemiological studies of outbreaks of food poisoning.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a bachelor's degree in environmental health, public health, or the physical and life sciences, including at least 36 hours in Biology, Chemistry or Environmental Science.

    + Must be skilled in written and oral communication, and possess knowledge of the principles and practices of environmental health.

    + Valid class “D” driver’s license, use of personal vehicle, and maintenance of valid personal vehicle insurance as required by Tennessee Law.

     

    Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply; however, at the present time, MPHD is not sponsoring individuals through any of the US Governments employment-based immigration programs.
