Position Summary:

The House Manager(s) will work alongside the BTH team and guests living at BTH to create a welcoming, home-like environment while supporting the mission, vision, and goals of BTH.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Supporting guests by helping them get oriented and accustomed to the home.

• Receiving guest referrals and connecting with the appropriate contact for admission screening.

• Helping to keep the house stocked with food to ensure food security: receive food run and other donations. Note any supplies running low at shift change.

• Preparing daily family-style dinner and sharing in the meal with guests when applicable.

• Working to meet a wide variety of guest needs as they arise (This may include helping to troubleshoot everything from doing laundry and finding supplies around the house, to finding and applying for community resources like free clothing and public benefits).

• Keeping the house and its culture safe, respectful and kind, and talking to guests directly and compassionately about this need when a boundary is crossed.

• Keeping the house clean, safe and in good repair (including seasonal outdoor activities such as mowing lawn or removing snow. Other activities such as changing light bulbs, etc.), and helping guests understand that expectation as well.

• Assist guests with scheduling medical and social services appointments, including transportation plan, and any necessary prescription pick-up.

• Working to support the mental health needs of guests, primarily by spending time and helping connect them with providers and resources.

• Coordinating with BTH volunteers, staff and/or Board (as appropriate) to communicate info as needed to effectively manage the house.

• Participate in board and committee meetings as determined appropriate/needed by the executive director and the board of directors.

• Maintain relationships and extending welcome to former guests as appropriate, including receiving mail, inviting them to visit the house, etc.

• Other duties as needed or assigned.

• Understanding and embodiment of The Bob Tavani House for Medical Respite mission and vision.

• Respect and value for working within a diverse community.

• Appreciation for and ability to work with differing perspectives.

• Demonstration of transferable skills and knowledge relevant to working within medical respite/recuperative care, health care, and homeless services.

• Excellent communication/interpersonal skills.

• Strong critical thinking/problem-solving skills.

• Awareness of and sensitivity for the role that trauma plays in people’s lives

Since 2018, the Bob Tavani House for Medical Respite (BTH) has been offering hospitality to people experiencing homelessness who’ve had an acute medical condition and are not well enough to recover on the streets or in a shelter, but are not ill enough to remain in a hospital. BTH serves individuals in Duluth, MN and the surrounding region. While guests stay with us, we work on supporting social determinants of health, housing and connections to supports in the community in hopes that they'll be in a better position when they leave our home.

Organizational Mission: To provide a supportive home environment while fostering connections to community for individuals who have an immediate medical need and lack safe housing.
