    The Principal Gifts Strategy Officer has key responsibilities in multiple, distinct leadership areas essential for the planning and successful launch of new transformational projects at Johns Hopkins University. The Principal Gifts Strategy Officer will act as a partner to Development & Alumni Relations and Johns Hopkins Leadership in developing proposals for and standing up donor-funded programs, as well as aid in the evaluation and stewardship of these programs. This individual will be expected to work at both strategic and tactical levels. The Principal Gifts Strategy Officer will require a high level of donor/external strategy, project management, and internal navigation. The Principal Gifts Strategy Officer does not have a fundraising portfolio but will play a critical role in aligning internal stakeholders on strategy for donors and is expected to represent the institution to external stakeholders as needed.

    Key responsibilities:

    _Prospect_ _Identification and Cultivation:_

    + Identify and establish new principal gift level opportunities and relationships (especially with non-alumni) by mobilizing new networks, particularly with priority areas with global appeal. Build creative, persistent outreach to new philanthropic individuals and entities based on the University’s and Divisional Strategic Plans, as well as university-wide fundraising campaigns.

    + Develop personalized cultivation strategies for individual prospects, while tailoring approaches based on their interests and capacity to give.

    + Collaborate with administration, faculty, and volunteers to engage prospects effectively.

    + Conduct face-to-face meetings with prospects, including travel as necessary.

    _Solicitation and Relationship Building:_

    + Recommend and implement solicitation strategies for principal gifts emphasizing the alignment of their philanthropic goals with institutional priorities.

    + Work closely with university leaders to leverage their relationships and vision in securing support.

    + Maintain a portfolio of prospects and provide outstanding stewardship by representing best practices.

    _Proposal Development:_

    + Convene and lead the strategy in partnership with the Office of Development Strategy proposal team to identify and articulate big ideas for principal level proposals that will appeal to unaffiliated prospects.

    + Guide the narrative, data, storytelling and budget development for principal level proposals with new unaffiliated prospects.

    _Individual and Industry Research:_

    + Direct research efforts to qualify new unaffiliated principal level prospects’ interest and giving potential.

    + Stay informed about new significant philanthropic investment announcements and trends in philanthropy across higher education. Utilize this knowledge to enhance institutional strategy and advise leadership.

    + Develop a set of reporting mechanisms that underscores both data accuracy and creative storytelling to inform and engage institutional leaders, DAR colleagues and volunteers in our efforts to grow the pool of principal level prospects and donors.

    _Collaboration and Communication:_

    + Collaborate with colleagues across departments to ensure a cohesive approach to fundraising.

    + Be aware of institutional and divisional funding priorities in the development of big ideas for support.

    + Cultivate relationships with corporate and foundation prospects as needed.

    + Draft proposals, newsletters, and other materials to communicate impact and opportunities.

    + Partner with University and Medicine communications colleagues to announce, as appropriate, and recognize new commitments for institutional support.

    _Signature Site Visit and Event Planning:_

    + Engagement of new prospects and donors at the principal gift level requires significant efforts to design and implement meaningful engagement through onsite visits to meet with institutional thought leaders and faculty experts.

    + Assist in planning and direction of high-level engagement events.

    + Other duties as assigned.

    In addition to the duties described above, the Principal Gifts Strategy Officer will:

    + In collaboration with FJHM Sr. Associate Director of Stewardship, develop stewardship roadmaps for successful principal gift solicitations, supporting execution as appropriate.

    + Collaborate closely with fundraising teams, departmental leadership, and faculty to generate innovative and impactful philanthropic concepts.

    + Maintain and develop best practice resources for proposal development shared across the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine.

    + Train and mentor colleagues across the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine in principal-level proposal development.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree.

    + Five years of related fundraising experience required including success at the seven-figure level.

    + Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Advanced degree in business or public administration (Master's or JD)

    + Background in science/technical writing, consulting, or measurement and evaluation

    + Proficiency in visual communications or data storytelling

    + Higher education and/or academic medical fundraising experience

    + Proven success closing complex gifts, including both outright, pledged, and deferred giving

    + Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)

    + Experience using a CRM

    Starting Salary Range: Minimum: $85,500 - Maximum: $149,000 (targeted salary: $95,000; commensurate with experience)

    Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm
