    PURPOSE

    The laboratory coordinator will be employed at the Marine Genomics Lab at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi and will be responsible for carrying out various duties in the lab including but not limited to, benchwork, maintaining and ensuring proper usage of the lab and lab instruments, organizing and processing samples and assisting with report preparation, preparing and recording lab data and using software to organize such data.

    DESCRIPTION

    Functional Area 1: Laboratory Coordination

    Percent Effort: 60%

    + Coordinate and administer routine functions of the laboratory and implement technical procedures to be used in data collection.

    + Order laboratory supplies, reagents and equipment; maintain records of lab supplies and equipment. Maintain inventory of the lab; prepare requisitions and process vouchers.

    + Assist with reporting and cataloging records using common computer software to organize data.

    + Interact with students and other department members and assist with their work as directed by the supervisor.

    + Perform other duties as assigned including mail distribution and delivery within the lab, department and/or other locations in campus.

     

    Functional Area 2: Research Support

    Percent Effort: 30%

    + Performs standard molecular genetics techniques such as DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, and polymerase chain-reaction (PCR)

    + Constructs next-generation sequencing (NGS) libraries using various methods

    + Modifies existing protocols and develop new protocols for next-generation DNA sequencing

    + Collects and analyzes field and laboratory data

    + Prepares figures/table or text for reports and manuscripts for submission to granting agencies and academic journals

     

    Functional Area 3: Compliance

    Percent Effort: 10%

    + Responsible for laboratory compliance with standard operation procedures and best laboratory practices. Responsible for quality control and quality assurance functions.

    + Responsible for maintenance of permits (federal and state) associated with field work and tissue import.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    + Bachelors in biological sciences or related field.

    + Two (2) years of related experience.

    + Additional education may be considered as a substitute for the minimum experience requirement: Masters degree in biological sciences or related field.

    + Knowledge of molecular biology laboratory equipment, scientific apparatus and computer equipment.

    + Experience with next-generation sequencing library preparation or other genomic techniques

    + Ability to balance multiple projects and pay close attention to detail

    + Demonstrated experience with laboratory management

    + Ability to maintain the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment system or water treatment system.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    + Master’s degree in the biological sciences

    + Two (2) years in scientific research related to molecular biology

     

    NOTE: This position is grant-funded. Continued employment is contingent upon continued funding.
