    ABOUT THE POSITION

    The Clark County District Attorney's Office (Civil Division) is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Paralegal position. This position will perform paraprofessional legal support work, in a legal office or court setting, including legal research, interviewing clients and witnesses, preparing legal documents, assisting in case preparation, and coordinating assigned programmatic areas.

    This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education and Experience: Equivalent to completion of two years of college course work in paralegal or legal assistant studies. Experience as a paralegal may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.

     

    All qualifying education and each experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application.     Licensing and Certification: Certification as a Paralegal and/or certification from the National Association of Legal Assistants is desirable.

     

    Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

     

    Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Please note, Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships or transfers for any employment positions.

     

    Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    + Interviews defendants, inmates, witnesses, and various clients to obtain information regarding cases, judgments, conservator ships and other activities and functions related to the department to which assigned.

    + Explains procedures, regulations and policies to those interviewed, attorneys and the public; refers individuals to other sources of information and assistance as appropriate.

    + Performs legal research under the direction of an attorney; gathers information regarding laws, ordinances, regulations, court decisions and similar materials related to assigned support area; prepares summaries of research results and conclusions.

    + Organizes, indexes and summarizes research results, including opinions, testimony, medical reports, and other documents.

    + Prepares a variety of legal documents such as motions, pleadings, interrogatories and briefs; completes and files documents, following established procedures.

    + Contacts witnesses and arranges for depositions, court appearances, administrative hearings and arbitrations.

    + Coordinates the timely processing of documents for specified programmatic areas; provides technical advice regarding such assignments.

    + Organizes exhibits and other documents for hearings and trials.

    + Maintains the law library and accurate records and files.

    + Attends and assists at trials, depositions, hearings and other meetings.

    + May prepare and serve subpoenas; prepares a variety of correspondence and general written materials.

    + Organizes own work, sets priorities, and meets critical deadlines.

    + Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.

    + May direct the work of others on a project basis; may train others in work procedures.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
