    Mechanic, Plant Engineering

     

    Full Time, 80 Hours Per Pay Period, Night Shift

    Job Objectives:

    Provide maintenance of Methodist Medical Center buildings and grounds, equipment and distribution lines for steam, electricity, hot water, plumbing and sanitation.

    Responsibilities

    + Performs mechanical repairs to machines and equipment, masonry work, plumbing, heating, refrigeration, batteries, boilers, water treatment, plastering and sheet metal.

    + Oversees and ensures safe and efficient operation of physical plant and Methodist Medical Center utilities.

    + Observes mechanical devices in operation to locate causes of trouble; dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts; and repairs or replaces defective parts.

    + Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments or installs special functional and structural parts.

    + Maintains, lubricates and performance tests equipment.

    + Initiates purchase orders for parts and machines as necessary.

    + Performs masonry and plastering duties following written or oral instructions in altering and/or repairing interior/exterior of Methodist Medical Center Buildings, including tearing down, repairing partitions and laying brick, tile and concrete floors.

    + In the absence of boiler attendant, and as directed, performs boiler attendant duties.

    + Installs, inspects, operates and repairs refrigeration equipment for preserving food, making ice, cooling water and air conditioning for Methodist Medical Center buildings.

    + Assists in maintaining cleanliness of shop and work areas.

    + Provides preventive maintenance for all assigned machinery and mechanical equipment as prescribed by the preventive maintenance program.

    + NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Other duties as assigned.

    + HEALTH/SAFETY/COMPETENCE: Cannot pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others. Must provide safe, efficient, competent care to customer or patient population. Must demonstrate competency of the specific functions described in the performance continuum and skill check lists.

    Qualifications

    Education/Knowledge/Skills:

    Must have a high school diploma or an equivalent certificate (GED); must be able to read with comprehension, write legibly, perform simple mathematic calculations, and follow oral and written instructions as required. Prior courses in blue print reading, electricity, machine shop, mathematics, plastering, construction principles, masonry and plumbing are required. Must be familiar with building maintenance techniques, equipment and operation of power plants, plumbing and hearing systems; sanitation; refrigeration; electrical systems; and fire and safety regulations and procedures. Should be familiar with work and limitations of various crafts primarily involved in building maintenance. Must be capable of working under emergency and/or stressful conditions.

    Experience:

    Five years of progressive experience in maintenance work is required, or a 2-year degree (or completion of a 12 – 24 month vocational certification) in a related field accompanied by a minimum of one year maintenance/construction work experience.
