    Summary

    The Fire Mitigation Specialist is responsible for providing leadership and program direction for the company's fire mitigation program. The Fire Mitigation Specialist leads and coordinates the development of short and long-range fire mitigation program plans and integrating the fire mitigation program with other APS departments and external partners including Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Land Management, Arizona State Land Department, and other Federal and State agencies.

    In this role you will:

    + Develop fire control plans, policies, and procedures for prevention, detection, suppression, and restoration.

    + Compile and review fire risk data; coordinate with agencies on wildfire suppression and prescribed burns.

    + Provide technical guidance to integrate wildfire processes into APS plans and projects; support training programs.

    + Plan and oversee land clearance; advise on fire season preparedness.

    + Update high fire-risk feeder lists and lead annual stakeholder reviews.

    + Analyze wildfire risks with internal teams and develop mitigation strategies.

    + Create and deliver fire prevention programs and employee training; maintain related resources.

    + Act as APS liaison with external entities and ensure compliance with Wildland-Urban Interface Code.

     

    NOTE: This role does require significant travel throughout the state of Arizona ( about 70%). Must be available for occasional weekend work and for response to emergency situations outside regular business hours

    Minimum Requirements

    + BS or BA degree in Fire Science or a related field and five (5) years fire management, emergency planning/response or related experience,

    + OR Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Science and seven (7) years related fire management, emergency planning/response, or related experience,

    + OR High school diploma (or equivalent) and nine (9) years fire management, emergency planning/response, or related experience.

    + Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

    + Must have one (1) year of specialized experience performing the following duties:

    + Assisting with a component of a wild land and/or prescribed fire management program.

    + Implementation of a fire mitigation budget.

    + Implementation of agreements with cooperators, and/or

    + Maintaining relationships with entities external to the organization regarding fire management program issues.

    Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:

    + Experience working in an outdoor environment in remote areas and in inclement weather.

    + Effective communication skills demonstrated through written communications and presentations. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet.

    + Experience with ArcGIS and working knowledge of GPS and field data collection methods.

     

    Onsite: Requires work to be performed in the field and/or at an APS facility. Depending on the responsibilities of the role, this may include, but is not limited to, working at a power plant, job site, or in the community.

     

    + Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).
