Academic Advisor I - Criminal Justice
Wayne State University is searching for an experiencedAcademic Advisor I - Criminal Justiceat its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):
Communicate effectively and accurately all University and departmental academic and nonacademic requirements, policies, procedures.
Maintain continuous advising relationships with students; effectively engage students in broad discussion from initial college preparedness through career planning; monitor and communicate using university systems, social media, small group, and face-to-face sessions, as appropriate.
Coordinate retention efforts and help with alumni relations.
Work in consultation with experienced advisors, practicum director and coordinator, administrative assistant; work effectively with and report to department chair. Continuously develop knowledge of best practices, policies and procedures, technological tools, etc.
Serve as department point person in college-wide advising efforts. Demonstrate ability to act as liaison with other units; participate in meetings and work as a member of a team.
Advise prospective and current undergraduate students; provide a comprehensive suite of advising services. Prepare undergraduate work plans. Advise potential and current students on admission, graduation, and certification requirements.
Assist in recruiting efforts, represent department at regional high school and community college programs and at college recruiting events; coordinate special programs. Facilitate orientation sessions and/or orientation courses for FTIACs, transfers, and other student populations.
Must be available to work evening and weekend hours as requested. Must have own transportation.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree for Academic Advisor I and Master's degree for Academic Advisor II; in Criminal Justice or related field.
Ability to quickly assimilate extensive knowledge of a complex nature.
Ability to relate well and establish rapport with students, other staff, faculty, parents, and community.
Time management, organization, communication - written and oral, interpersonal, computer, work in a team setting, creativity.
Working knowledge of social media.
Experience with diverse student populations: race/ethnicity, gender, age, economic level, first generation, first time and transfer, etc.
Ability to work effectively with students of varying levels of academic preparedness.
Preferred qualifications:
Previous experience in higher education.
