    Summary About the Position: Incumbent operates a variety of heavy equipment such as graders, dozers, dump trucks, tractor-trailer combinations, agricultural tractors, compaction road rollers, front-end loaders, backhoes and excavators in the preparation and maintenance of U.S. Army Training Ranges throughout Alaska. Responsibilities Operate graders and compaction road rollers to maintain and repair secondary roads and firebreaks, providing rough-cut to finish surfaces. Operate full tracked dozers equipped with angle and straight blades and rippers. Prepare road subgrades, develops rock pits, maintains fire breaks, clears brush, and performs road closures and erosion control projects, and rangeland restoration. Operate tractor trailers (gross vehicle weight approx. 100,000 lb.) and 8 to 12 cubic yard capacity dump trucks to haul dirt, rock, debris, erosion control and drainage materials, and heavy equipment, and to distribute water. Operate large agricultural tractors to pull various restoration implements such as offset disc, culti-packer/roller, range land seed drills, broadcast spreaders, shrub/tree planters, rotary mowers, and land leveling equipment. Perform maintenance work such as assisting carpenters with construction and maintenance of wooden range related equipment; minor building repair; and reviewing equipment/markings on firing ranges. Use snowmobile, ATV or other motorized vehicle to travel to work sites on the ranges. Perform limited painting tasks (e.g., range equipment, fabricated target devices, minor building jobs, etc.), using brushes, rollers, and electric airless paint spraying equipment. Perform welding repairs and fabrication (e.g., targets and supports, trailers, hitches, etc.). Perform small engine repairs (e.g., snowblowers, snowmobiles, lawnmowers, weedeaters, waterpumps, etc.). Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an ENGINEERING EQUIPMENT OPERATOR without more than normal supervision. Must have the ability to perform common tasks by safely operating and maneuvering one or more types of gasoline or diesel-powered heavy equipment. Must be able to grade surfaces, compact soils, or roll to exact specifications on flat or rolling terrain and steer and operate engineering equipment by using clutches, levers, brakes, and valves according to the slope or tilt. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Related to Mobile Equipment Operation) Ability to Operate Safely (Non-motor Vehicles) Operation of Motor Vehicles Reliability and Dependability Work Practices (Including Keeping Things Neat, Clean, and in Order) Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is used through constant bending, reaching, turning, and moving of hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls. Considerable strain is caused by constant vibration and jerking and jolting from operations over rough surfaces. Frequently required to work in awkward, strained, or uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds; occasionally handles heavier items. Working Conditions: Works in all types of weather (hot, dry, cold, wet, windy) to include extreme arctic conditions, often in open driver's seat or platform on hills, slopes, grades, and rolling surfaces. Exposed to possible cuts, bruises, scrapes, sprains, when operating and handling equipment, and injury due to possible overturning of equipment. Subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required. This is a(n) Construction, Engineering and Infrastructure Career Field position. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees. Since Alaska is considered a non-foreign overseas location, statutory return rights for current DoD employees are applicable in many circumstances.
