Position Description
We invite applicants for a postdoctoral fellow position in the Laboratory of Systems Pharmacology ( LSP ) within the Harvard Program in Therapeutic Science at Harvard Medical School in Boston Massachusetts. Specifically, this fellowship is focused on machine-assisted visualization. We welcome applications from recent PhD graduates who are interested in these or related fields, particularly those who may bring a new technology or perspective to bear on the work in the lab.
The successful candidate will work with the Principal Investigator Dr. Peter Sorger and Jeremy Muhlich, Director of Software Engineering, to develop an independent research project within the scope of the lab’s research focus. In addition to carrying out machine-assisted visualization research, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the writing of grants and manuscripts, participate in teaching and mentoring of lab members as needed, and otherwise contribute to overall lab operations and collaborative environment.
The fellow will conduct research into the design and implementation of interactive visual analytics and data visualization approaches for 2-D and 3-D tissue imaging date based on human-in-the-loop machine learning. The specific goal is to extend new and existing visualization environments to support efficient and precise annotation of histopathology images using a combination of expert human review and machine learning. The fellow is expected to lead the effort in consultation with imaging experts, pathologists, and computational biologists on software design and execution. Since many trainees and staff in the Sorger lab and the broader Laboratory of Systems Pharmacology ( LSP ) are currently making use of interactive visualization as part of their own research, this role has strong opportunities for mentorship of graduate students and collaboration with other fellows.
This position requires that the fellow work in-person in the LSP on the HMS Quadrangle for at least three days per week with the possibility of two remote days. While on-campus, the fellow will interact with PI Sorger and students, fellows and other faculty on a regular basis and present at regular subgroup and group meetings. To promote career development, the fellow will develop the project independently, participate in national and international conferences, and publish the work in conference and journal papers. The specific grant or award funding will be clearly communicated to the incumbent in this role, detailing which project(s) they will be supporting.

Basic Qualifications
+ Ph.D. in computer science, machine learning, or a closely related field
+ Demonstrated expertise in visualization methods and technologies as applied to complex biomedical images
+ Strong publication record and evidence of research independence
+ Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
+ Must provide: CV; cover letter highlighting research interests and experience; contact information for three references
Additional Qualifications
+ Experience with computational pathology as applied to highly multiplexed and/or classical histology images strongly preferred
+ Fluency in Python programming

Expected Dates
