The Youth and Family Program Specialist at the Natural History Museum of Utah ( NHMU ) is responsible for identifying program supply needs by reviewing all curricula, purchasing cost-effective resources, and ensuring supplies are organized, stocked, and available in advance of program delivery. This position will oversee the scheduling of a small supply team and will need to stay current with University of Utah Purchase Card processes. In addition, the Program Specialist will support the development and delivery of department programs such as birthday parties, family workshops, youth classes, and camps. This position works closely with the Manager and Coordinator to ensure K-8th grade STEAM -based program activities are innovative, engaging, and promote social-emotional learning, critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and resiliency. These programs must meet evaluation standards for effectiveness. As part of the Museum’s Education and Community Engagement team, the Program Specialist will be expected to embody the Museum’s core values of inquiry, cooperation, continual improvement, and belonging. A successful candidate will have experience in both formal and informal youth development and out-of-school-time programming, with a confident and professional demeanor capable of making complex science concepts fun and memorable. The role requires excellent organization and communication skills, both written and verbal, along with the ability to evaluate options, generate solutions, and navigate new challenges with flexibility. Dependability, punctuality, and self-direction are critical to the position. The Natural History Museum of Utah places a strong emphasis on providing an exceptional experience for every guest, and all staff members, including the Program Specialist, are expected to contribute to creating inclusive, memorable experiences for visitors, partners, and the community. Employees in guest-facing roles who are fluent in a language beyond English and willing to engage with guests in that language will receive a 50 cent per hour wage increase.

    Responsibilities

    1. Program Supplies and Budget Management:

    * Identifying and purchasing program supplies.

    * Ensuring compliance with University of Utah Purchase Card processes.

    * Guarantees program supplies are available for every program.

    2. Support for Youth and Family Programs:

    * Facilitates and assists in the development and oversight of programs like birthday parties, family workshops, youth classes, and camps.

    * Collaborates with the Manager and Coordinator to promote STEAM -based activities that emphasize social-emotional learning, critical thinking, and teamwork.

    3. Skills and Experience Requirements:

    * Strong experience in formal and informal youth development programming.

    * Ability to make complex science concepts fun and understandable.

    * Excellent communication, organizational skills, and problem-solving abilities.

    * Flexibility, self-direction, and professionalism are essential.

    4. Guest Experience Focus:

    This role emphasizes a mix of program support, communication, creativity, and guest interaction to ensure both the educational and logistical success of the Museum’s offerings. The candidate needs a balance of instructional and operational expertise, with a passion for organization and creating memorable educational experiences.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), and two years related experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

    Preferences

    * Bachelor’s degree (or getting a degree) in Education, Science, or related discipline.

    * Broad knowledge of natural history topics.

    * Background in nonprofits.

    * Positive outlook and be a team player.

    * Second language proficiency, particularly in Spanish.
