    Title: Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

     

    Hartwick College seeks an engaged and active student-centered leader with a commitment to academic excellence and a deep understanding of experience-enhanced liberal education to serve as its next Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.

     

    The ideal candidate is a forward-thinking academic, with strong leadership and management skills, integrity and a commitment to transparency, and who is ready to support the vision for the future of Hartwick College. The successful candidate is results-focused with a solid record of innovative program development and academic success, and the skill to lead and support faculty and staff in establishing and achieving the College community’s strategic goals.

     

    The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost reports directly to the President and will manage a multifaceted division while serving as a key member of the College’s senior leadership team. As the College’s Chief Academic Officer and the President’s primary advisor on academic matters, this role provides future-oriented, innovative and strategic leadership for the College’s academic program in service to Hartwick’s strategic goals.

     

    The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost will work to advocate for faculty so that they can deliver a world-class education. Working closely with the President, the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost will serve as the senior staff liaison to the Board of Trustees Academic Program Committee, providing insights and information to ensure the board is prepared to make decisions that will maintain and improve the College’s academic reputation.

     

    The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost is a leader who values experience-enhanced liberal arts education, and is prepared to promote and support pedagogical innovation, undergraduate research and international study, as well as the development of graduate programs, adult learning, online education, and a sense of belonging.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Strategic Academic Leadership

    + Act as the President’s primary advisor on academic matters, providing future-oriented, innovative and strategic leadership for the College’s academic program.

    + Serve as a key member of Hartwick’s Senior Leadership Team,  a group of administrators who guide the College’s core academic, financial and operational priorities.

    + Work closely with members of the Senior Leadership Team on coordination of daily operations and institution-wide goal setting to assure the accomplishment of Hartwick’s strategic goals.

    + Lead and ensure the integrity of all components of the academic program to deliver a high-quality educational program that benefits all Hartwick students.

    + Lead the Division of Academic Affairs, assuring the development of all academic components to support the general education curriculum.

    + Advocate for faculty so they can ensure that Hartwick’s educational program is designed and delivered in a manner that helps students to achieve learning goals.

    + Follow systems and processes to ensure that all academic departments are fully engaged in managing curricula.

    + Serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet, an advisory body to the President which also provides an important channel for sharing information with the campus community.

    Faculty Support and Academic Innovation

    + Work collaboratively with faculty to establish and implement priorities for Hartwick’s academic programs and activities, and ensure the quality of all academic offerings.

    + Promote and support pedagogical innovation, undergraduate research and international study.

    + Proactively work with faculty and others to develop, support and promote the development of graduate, adult learning and online educational offerings.

    + Support and assure the professional development of academic department chairs.

    Administrative and Operational Leadership

    + Manage the multi-million-dollar budget of the Division of Academic Affairs.

    + Lead the Office of Academic Affairs and manage a multifaceted division.

    + Oversee a portfolio that may include the Stevens-German Library, the Student Success and Career Center, the Griffiths Center for Collaboration and Innovation, the Center for Global Education, the Office of the Registrar, and the Yager Museum of Art and Culture.

    Compliance and Institutional Integrity

    + Serve as Hartwick’s liaison to accreditors, assuring that the College complies with all accreditor requirements for program approvals and reporting.

    + Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to prepare for Middle States Accreditation, with the next review in 2027-28.

    + Comply with all applicable College, federal, state and local and other regulations.

    Campus Engagement and Representation

    + Be an active and visible member of the campus community.

    + Participate in major campus events, such as Welcome Weekend, True Blue Weekend, and Commencement Weekend.

    + As a representative of the College, act in a professional manner at all times, both on and off campus.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Leadership in Academics

    + Demonstrated ability to lead, support and promote both undergraduate and graduate academic programs.

    + Demonstrated ability to lead professional academic administration.

    + Demonstrated successful supervisory experience, analytical ability, excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

    Commitment to Shared Governance and Collaboration

    + Demonstrated commitment to shared governance.

    + Commitment to the needs of all constituencies and the ability to work collaboratively to assure effective management strategies within a collegial, diverse environment.

    Student-Centered Educational Philosophy

    + Demonstrated commitment to a student-centered, experience-enhanced, holistic approach to liberal arts education that underscores excellence in teaching, advising, scholarship, service and career preparation.

    Community Engagement and Leadership Presence

    + Demonstrated commitment to the College community as well as personal enjoyment in being a visible, approachable and actively involved leader both on and off campus.

    REQUIRED CREDENTIALS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    The minimum requirements for this position are:

    + Earned doctorate or other appropriate terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution.

    + Record of teaching, scholarship and service commensurate with the rank of full professor.

    + Significant, relevant and progressively responsible experience in academic administration.

    + Demonstrated evidence of collaborative leadership and success in meeting strategic goals.

    + Experience with online teaching and learning.

    + Experience with faculty recruitment and development.

    + Experience with curricular development and assessment.

    + Appreciation for the role of shared governance.

     

    Salary Range: $180,000 - $200,000
