Introduction
A career in IBM Software means you’ll be part of a team that transforms our customer’s challenges into solutions.
Seeking new possibilities and always staying curious, we are a team dedicated to creating the world’s leading AI-powered, cloud-native software solutions for our customers. Our renowned legacy creates endless global opportunities for our IBMers, so the door is always open for those who want to grow their career.
IBM’s product and technology landscape includes Research, Software, and Infrastructure. Entering this domain positions you at the heart of IBM, where growth and innovation thrive.
This role is closely aligned to the Hashicorp Cloud Platform offering, and this team owns the core engine—the standardized compute, networking, security controls, and base operational services—that all product teams build upon. Our mission is to provide an opinionated, highly reliable, and secure environment that standardizes infrastructure operations across our multi-cloud footprint.
We leverage a product-minded approach to infrastructure, ensuring tight feedback loops with our product development teams, security, and compliance to make sure the foundation is always ahead of product needs.
Your role and responsibilities
You can expect to:
*
People Leadership and Mentorship: Lead, hire, and mentor a team of Infrastructure and Software Engineers, providing regular 1:1 coaching, performance reviews, and detailed career development plans.
*
Technical Accountability: Partner with Staff/Principal Engineers to review architecture proposals, ensure adherence to engineering standards, and maintain code quality and service performance across the runtime environment.
*
Operational Health Ownership: Be accountable for the reliability and uptime of the Runtime platform. This includes managing and improving the on-call rotation, overseeing incident response protocols, and driving down mean time to recovery (MTTR).
*
Cost and Resource Optimization: Monitor runtime resource consumption and actively lead efforts within the team to identify, plan, and execute cost-saving optimizations without compromising security or reliability.
*
Process Improvement: Continuously refine engineering processes (e.g., CI/CD pipelines, testing strategies, deployment safety) to increase the team's development velocity and efficiency.
Role and Responsibilities
This is an Engineering Manager role leading a high-impact team of talented, senior engineers responsible for the most fundamental pieces of our cloud platform. The ideal candidate is passionate about people leadership, technical execution, and driving operational excellence as a core feature. You will be instrumental in translating the long-term vision into actionable, incremental delivery.
You will use your experience to invest deeply in the growth and development of your engineers, leveraging their technical strengths while coaching them on project leadership and cross-functional collaboration. You will be the primary advocate for the team, balancing immediate operational needs with necessary strategic development time.
Required technical and professional expertise
* Solid professional management experience in software engineering, infrastructure engineering, or SRE, with a focus on cloud-native systems.
* Deep practical expertise with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles and strong working experience with tools like Terraform.
* Proven ability to manage operational health and reliability—this includes experience with incident management, post-mortems, and setting and meeting Service Level Objectives (SLOs).
* Transformation Leadership: Experience leading organizational or process change (e.g., migrating major systems, adopting new SRE standards) and effectively guiding a team through significant technical shifts.
* Prior experience operating multi-cloud or hybrid-cloud infrastructure at scale.
Preferred technical and professional experience
* Experience with container orchestration systems at scale
* Experience guiding teams through compliance processes or operating in heavily regulated environments (e.g., SOC 2, FedRAMP).
* Proven ability to proactively engage with non-technical and executive stakeholders to gather requirements, manage competing priorities, and negotiate scope for complex, long-running infrastructure programs.
